-wing was a suffix frequently used when naming starfighters.

-wing followed a High Galactic Alphabet letter which was chosen to represent the shape and design of the starfighter, however, in some cases, such similarity was not easily apparent. This "custom" had been noticed in ancient times—as early as the Jedi Civil War—but was most readily apparent in the names of the ships of the Galactic Civil War.
