The 88th Flight was a starfighter flight that served within the naval forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars against the Galactic Republic. The flight consisted of at least three Vulture-class droid starfighters and was stationed aboard Skytop Station[1] on the second moon of the planet Ruusan, where they engaged Republic forces that boarded the station to rescue the astromech droid R2-D2[2] in 22 BBY.[3]

The three Vulture droids were destroyed during the Republic mission; Jedi Padawan Ahsoka Tano mounted one in a station's hangar, causing a second to fire upon it before Tano mounted the second and decapitated it. The third was destroyed when a fuel canister was thrown by Tano's Jedi Master, Anakin Skywalker, with the Force and Clone Captain Rex firing on it, exploding and eliminating the remaining Separatist forces.[2]

Behind the scenes[]

The 88th Flight made its first appearance, although only in the episode's opening newsreel, in "Ambush,"[4] the first episode of the first season of the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series, which aired on October 3, 2008.[5] It later made its full appearance in "Duel of the Droids,"[2] the first season's seventh episode, which aired on November 14, 2008.[6]

The flight was first identified in the fifty-sixth issue of De Agostini's Star Wars: Build the Millennium Falcon magazine, published around January 27, 2016.[7] In the Star Wars Legends continuity, the 88th Flight was originally identified in the 88th Flight Droid fighter card of the Clone Wars expansion pack released as part of Topps' Star Wars PocketModel TCG[8] trading card game on July 26, 2008.[9]
