The all-purpose mass driver cannon was based on flak guns found on various military units such as; AT-AA's, Munificent-class star frigates, and Providence-class carrier/destroyers. Each was simply a modified flak gun that could hold several types of ammunition. Additionally, most known types of ammunition could fit in the same canisters used to store flak, making the all purpose mass driver cannon capable of firing almost any type of warhead or projectile.

Standard canisters payloads included: Assault proton torpedoes (2 per canister); assault concussion missiles (4 per canister); seismic charges (one per canister); and flak. Often, these guns were seen on various pirate warships and mercenary ships that dated from the time of the Clone Wars onwards.
