[edit] Biology and appearance

The Amarans were a sentient species of bipedal canines. The fox-like species[1] had bushy tails and were covered in fur. This fur was orange across their back, tail, and much of their arms and legs; however, white patches of fur grew on the inside of their limbs, on their snout, as well as in a central patch of their torso.[2]

[edit] Society and culture

The Amarans were notorious hagglers, a skill they used when exporting bursas from their homeworld.[1]

[edit] History

The Amarans evolved on the planet Amar.[1] During the reign of the New Republic, a number of Amarans lived on the planet Naboo, where they captured wild bursas which they then bred to export offworld. A number of the beasts were taken to Coruscant for sale.[2]

[edit] Behind the scenes

Amy Pronovost originally designed the Amarans for The Essential Guide to Episode I at the request of its intended author Dan Wallace; however, the product was ultimately never published.[3] They later appeared in The Wildlife of Star Wars: A Field Guide, illustrated by Terryl Whitlatch, based directly on Pronovost's preliminary sketches.

It was originally thought that the vulpine Amarans might have been inspired by the cartoon character "Amara Fox" also drawn by Pronovost. However, Pronovost revealed on Wookieepedia:

This is Amy, of the Amara Fox fame. They weren't inspired by Amara Fox, but the history of the aliens came from a conversation that there weren't any Vulpine aliens in the Star Wars Galaxy. I did some prelim sketches for both the Amarans and the Bursa and they ended up becoming published aliens based directly on my designs.[4]
