The title of this article is conjectural.

Although this article is based on canonical information, the actual name of this subject is pure conjecture.

A quite different and intelligible ancient language existed around 200,000 BBY, before the creation of the Galactic Basic Standard and the Old Galactic Standard.

The language is evidenced only in the ancient poem Dha Werda Verda that remains untranslated.

Presumably it was the basis for the creation of Old Galactic Standard (along with the influences of Durese and Bothese) although to what extent and what was their exact relationship remain unknown.

[edit] Behind the scenes

  • To date, no exact history, description or even definition or name of that language has been given and the name 'Ancient Basic' is speculative.
  • Also, the translation of the known texts is unknown.
  • Ancient Basic was created by Ben Burtt for the lyrics to "Dha Werda Verda" specifically for the Shadows of the Empire CD.
  • Karen Traviss incorporated the words "Dha Werda Verda" in her corpus of the Mando'a conlang, therefore consisting them Mando'a proper. It is possible therefore that this ancient knowledge is directly related to Mando'a, not only Basic.
  • Fans have noted that the language is highly influenced by German.
