"Appo" was a clone trooper created from the genetic template of the human bounty hunter Jango Fett. Like his brethren, he was grown and trained to serve as a soldier of the Galactic Republic. With the formation of the Grand Army of the Republic and the subsequent outbreak of the Clone Wars, Appo fought against the droid forces of the Confederacy of Independent Systems in a galaxy-wide civil war. He served as a sergeant in the elite 501st Legion by the time of the Umbara campaign, initially leading clone troopers into battle under the leadership of Jedi General Anakin Skywalker until command of the 501st was temporarily transferred to General Pong Krell. Though he obediently followed Krell's orders, Appo and the 501st ultimately arrested the fallen Jedi for committing acts of treason against the Republic.

By 19 BBY, the final year of the Clone Wars, Appo had been promoted to the rank of commander while still serving in the 501st Legion. At that time, the Sith Lord Darth Sidious—publicly known as Sheev Palpatine, the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic—instructed the Grand Army to execute Order 66, branding the Jedi as enemies of the state. Due to his design as a clone, Appo complied with the protocol and turned against the Jedi Order. He accompanied the 501st during their attack on the Jedi Temple of Coruscant where he encountered Senator Bail Organa of Alderaan. While barring the inquisitive politician from entering the facility at the point of a DC-15A blaster, Appo and his squad were ambushed by the Padawan Zett Jukassa who succeeded in killing and wounding several clones, including Appo, before his own death.

Biography

Early life

The clone known as Appo was grown from the genetic source of the bounty hunter Jango Fett. Bred on the extragalactic world of Kamino, he was created to serve in an army of clone troopers that had been developed in secret to become the armed forces of the Galactic Republic. Within ten years of the clone army's inception, the Republic went to war with the secessionist movement known as the Confederacy of Independent Systems. As a result, Appo became a soldier in the newly-formed Grand Army of the Republic, serving in a number of critical battles across a galaxy divided by the Clone Wars.

Appo served in the Battle of Umbara as a sergeant in the 501st Legion.

In 20 BBY, Appo served as a sergeant in the 501st Legion by the time of the Republic invasion of Umbara. At first he fought the Separatist-aligned Umbarans under the leadership of Anakin Skywalker, a Jedi Knight and general of the Grand Army. However, Skywalker was recalled to the Republic capital of Coruscant, leaving Appo and the legion under the command of another Jedi officer, General Pong Krell, for the duration of the campaign.

Following a failed attempt to invade the capital city of Umbara, Krell and the 501st were dispatched on a new assignment to secure a heavily fortified Umbaran airbase that was critical to the Republic's strategy. At the General's command, Captain CT-7567 ("Rex") led a vanguard assault on the base's defense perimeter while Appo and the majority of the 501st remained at Krell's side as he observed the fighting from a distance. After the Umbarans' defenses were sabotaged by two clone infiltrators, the ARC trooper CT-5555 ("Fives") and the trooper known as "Hardcase," Krell gave the order for a full-scale attack, allowing Appo to deploy the rest of the legion to occupy the airbase.

In the aftermath of the battle for the airbase, Fives and another trooper, CT-5597 ("Jesse") were placed under military arrest for acts of insubordination against Krell. Although they were originally scheduled to be court-martialed, the General used his authority to sentence them both to summary execution. Appo escorted the rogue clones to the site of their execution, although the firing squad ultimately refused to carry out the order. Shortly afterward, it was discovered that Krell had been secretly supporting the Separatist cause after falling to the dark side of the Force. In response to the fallen Jedi's acts of treason, Appo and the 501st Legion mutinied against Krell with the support of the 212th Attack Battalion. Despite sustaining a number of casualties, they successfully apprehended the former Jedi. Krell was ultimately executed by the trooper "Dogma", who was ironically the former Jedi's most loyal follower.

Appo was wounded by Zett Jukassa during the 501st Legion's assault on the Jedi Temple.

After the events on Umbara, Appo received a promotion to the rank of clone commander. In the waning days of the Clone Wars, Darth Sidious—the Dark Lord of the Sith who orchestrated the fall of democracy in his guise as Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine—activated Order 66, a secret protocol that compelled the clone troopers to become hostile to the Jedi. As a result, Appo participated in the march on the Jedi Temple where the 501st Legion, led by the newly-anointed Sith Lord Darth Vader, proceeded to slaughter their former allies, including padawans and younglings.

The attack on the Jedi headquarters drew the Alderaanian Senator Bail Organa to the Temple, only to be barred from entering the facility by Appo and a contingent of the 501st. The commander claimed that the Temple had become the site of a "Jedi rebellion" and threatened Organa at the point of a blaster when the politician initially ignored the clone's attempt to block his path. However, their encounter with Organa distracted the clones from the approaching Padawan Zett Jukassa, who managed to kill and wound several soldiers before he was fatally shot by a 501st trooper.

Personality and traits

For most of his life, Appo had been trained for service as a soldier of the Galactic Republic. Like his clone brethren, he was also conditioned to be absolutely loyal to the chain of command, obeying every order without question. Though he witnessed firsthand Pong Krell's willingness to sacrifice clone lives for victory, Appo nonetheless remained loyal to his general until it was discovered that the Besalisk Jedi had betrayed the Republic. As a result of his programming, in the form of an control chip in his brain, Appo was forced to comply with Order 66.

As a clone of Jango Fett, Appo was physically identical to his human template in height and appearance. He stood at 1.83 meters and inherited his progenitor's hair and skin pigmentation as well.

Equipment

As a clone soldier in service to the Republic, Appo was equipped with the Phase II armor which supplanted the original Phase I version as the standard armor of the Grand Army clone troopers. In combat he utilized the DC-15A blaster and DC-15 blaster rifle. In addition, his utility belt was equipped with a N-20 Baradium-core thermal detonator. During his tenure as a sergeant, Appo's helmet had a white arrow shape running down its forehead. However, by the time of Order 66 this symbol was removed.

Behind the scenes

Appo first appeared in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith, where he was voiced by Temuera Morrison, and like every other clone trooper in the film, portrayed entirety with computer-generated imagery. The clone trooper voiceover artist Dee Bradley Baker provided Appo's voice in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series. The arrow on Appo's helmet is a nod to Appa, a character from Avatar: The Last Airbender, a show that The Clone Wars supervising director Dave Filoni had previously worked on.
