Architect
From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.
"Architects" is the nickname given to an unknown mysterious race or races that at some time in the distant past inhabited the galaxy and may have interfered with celestial astrography and the culture and technology of early sentient species.

[edit] The term
The origins of the Architects are unknown. Whether the Architect’s society was primarily galactic or extra-galactic (like the Yuuzhan Vong) is unknown.
To this legacy we can attribute some fantastic yet unexplained phenomena in the galaxy, which necessitate the theory of the existence of an advanced, ancient, and possibly extinct society. Such unexplained events as the building of Centerpoint Station and the artificial position of the planets of the Corellian system lend credence to the notion of an advanced society existing long before written record. The appearance of species seemingly humanoid in nature on many different planets long before the hyper-drive had been invented also lends to this theory. They are also credited with major technological breakthroughs in history, most notably the hyperdrive.
There is, however, a myriad of possibilities for the true origins of the Architects. Although any argument in this area is purely speculation, a handful of ancient empires managed to span on a galactic scale in the millennia before the Galactic Republic rose to power. It can be proposed the Architects may in fact be one race or species, or their fantastic legacy may be the collective works of multiple ancient empires. They may be a super-advanced group of beings who helped shape the galaxy for their own mysterious reasons. It is even possible that the Architects is simply a name given to the source of the unexplainable events scattered throughout prehistory.
[edit] Possible identities
A number of species created large empires predating the rise of the Galactic Republic. It is possible that any one, some, or even all of these races may be the inspiration for the legend of the Architects.

[edit] Behind the scenes
"Hyperspace aliens" is a fanon nickname of the otherwise undescribed aliens who according to Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, gave the hyperspace technology to Humans.
According to The New Essential Chronology, the Rakata were the originators of the technology, from where the Corellians adopted it, giving therefore a possible solution to the "mystery", though the book refers to the Architects, the famed hyperspace aliens, separately from the Rakata signifying they were only a part of the Architects 'myth'.
The Architects belong to the Ancient vanished precursors concept of many science fiction and fantasy works (usually video games). The Forerunners, from Halo, are one such example; The Protheans from Mass Effect are another example of a species who dissapeared at the peak of their civilization; the Stargate series' Ancients are yet another (albeit from television, not video games). They were a super advanced race who, when they reached the pinnacle of their power, simply faded away, content to rest for the remainder of their lifetime and watch the galaxy in peace. The Rakata also fit in this archetype in the KOTOR storyline.
