The armored hover train consisted of armored carriages that ran along what was apparently a maglev track. The Galactic Empire used one of these trains to transport prisoners and cargo across the spice-mine, asteroid-shaped planet Kessel. A similar train was later used by the Alliance to Restore the Republic to ferry supplies and reinforcements to Chandrila's capital city during the Battle of Chandrila.

There were three discernible carriage types on the train:

• Cockpit (a sloping cuboid), armed with a forward laser emplacement and two turreted laser emplacement (one on each side).
• Cargo carriage (a simple cuboid).
• Gun carriage with two turbolaser cannons and a missile launcher.

During the First Battle of the Maw, Karie Neth and a group of fellow prisoners hijacked an armored hover train to escape the Maw prison facility with Rogue Squadron's help.
