BL-17 was one of the many Battle Legionnaire battle droids produced by the Confederacy of Independent Systems that served the Mandalorians when they were allied with the CIS during the Clone Wars, and was one of the few units to survive that conflict. He eventually came into the ownership of the bounty hunter Boba Fett, who used him as a covert espionage droid on many hunts.
When Fett was hired by the gangster Sise Fromm to kill the young racing team of Thall Joben, Jord Dusat and Kea Moll he sent BL-17 to befriend C-3PO and lure them into a trap. BL-17 offered them a place where they could conduct repairs on their speeder, White Witch, and attempted to gas Kea, making it look like an accident. Kea escaped with the assistance of R2-D2.
BL-17's treachery was eventually exposed by Proto One and he was destroyed by falling machinery during a fight with R2-D2 and C-3PO.
