Bacteria mutation was a term applied to a process where a common bacteria from the Kathol Outback was mutated by exposure to the elements within the Kathol Rift. The resulting mutation spoiled food stores, leaving ships without a food source unless remedied. Doctor Vin Emil, a xenobotanist at the Q'Maere Research Facility, developed an antidote for the mutation known as Variant Alpha.
