Meena Tills, a female Mon Calamari with prominent barbels

Barbels,[1] informally known as "chin tentacles",[2] were the tendril-like appendages that fringed the mouth and chin of a Mon Calamari regardless of their sex.[1] Some, like Prince Lee-Char, adorned their barbels with ornaments.[3] The barbels were an indicator of youth when only one was present on the chin,[4] and this made elder Mon Calamari look bearded.[1] Similarly, the Gungans of Naboo grew fleshy chin whiskers as they aged.[5]
