The Separatist forces tracked Obi-Wan Kenobi, Siri Tachi, Anakin Skywalker, and Padmé Amidala by means of a tracer device planted in a foolproof codebreaker. This had been brought by Talesan Fry, who agreed to turn the codebreaker over to the Old Republic at a hidden base on Azure.

The base had meager defenses, and was badly outnumbered by the huge Separatist fleet. The Republic forces had to surrender control of the planet. General Solomahal, the general of the base, was determined not to let the codebreaker into Separatist hands, and before he was captured, he managed to destroy it.

[edit] The Battle

As the Republic forces discover that the Seps are planning to launch their attack on the weak planet of Azure, the Jedi take to their starfighters in an attempt to hold off the droids until clone reinforcements arrive. Padmé is sent with Taly in a starship away from the battle-the Jedi hoping they will make it to hyperspace in time. Meanwhile, Anakin leads the most skilled of the General's space pilots into battle against the massive force of Tri-Droids. Siri and Obi-Wan are also present, as they hold off the droids. When the enemy begins to fire on civilian ships, Padmé's is peppered with fire, and crashes, though two escape pods were launched. Siri and Kenobi peel from the main fight and work their way to the platform outside of the spaceport where the pods landed. As they release that the battle will be lost due to the droids' superior numbers, they contact Solomahal, telling him to have some men take a ship and retreat with the codebreaker, and have the ships and troops at the port prepare for evac. Refusing the suggestion, the General continues the fight, guarding the codebreaker himself. The Jedi arrive at the landing platform, but they are soon surprised by Magus in his red-black starfighter, who immediately opens fire. They hide behind fuel tanks, though not intelligent as far as cover goes, and our knocked back when Magus destroys one of them. In an attempt to level the playing field, they race to ARC-170 starfighters, Padmé with Siri, and Taly with Obi-Wan.

On the other side of the ordeal, Anakin begins to realize that though their casualties are extremely low and the they had been wiping out dozens of droids, they could not prevail against such a grand army. Suddenly receives a comm that Padmé's ship went down and he races to the platform, hoping to save her if she had survived. As the Jedi and others dogfight against Magus, Siri concocts a risky plan that may help them stop Magus. Crawling out of her ship and leaving Padmé in control, she leaps out into the air and uses the Force to land on Magus' ship, where she begins slashing through the top of the craft. Wanting to rid himself of his attacker, Magus flies wildly, jerking around, which forces Kenobi to launch a low-powered concussion missile that collides with the ship, knocking Siri into the cockpit and launching the starfighter to the ground. As they crash Magus flies out, beaten though alive, while Obi-Wan hops into the smoking ship to find Siri. He discovers overturned and shot by Magus, but still alive. With her last breaths, she gives Obi-Wan her warming crystal and confesses her love for him once more. Obi-Wan then leaves her and comes close to murdering Magus, but realizes that he is not the same as the bounty hunter-he does not kill without reason or thought. Kenobi than arrests him and loads him as a prisoner of war.

[edit] Aftermath

The droids bombed Taly's office and labs, destroying all of his inventions and work, most of which will be impossible to reproduce. Still fighting for a losing side, Solomahal is captured, though he destroys the codebreaker shortly before, stopping any chance of the Separatists obtaining it and its power. He later breaks free and is given another command. Back at the Jedi Temple, Obi-Wan mourns Siri and walks through the halls, unable to sleep just like his master twenty years before when Qui-Gon Jinn lost Tahl. But in his pain, he finally understands what Qui-Gon had tried to teach him so long ago-that he could survive with the loss of the person he loved most. Obi-Wan had finally learned how to love with an open heart.
