- ―Count Dooku
The Battle of Geonosis was the opening battle of the Clone Wars, fought between the Galactic Republic and the nascent Confederacy of Independent Systems on the planet Geonosis.
After Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi, having discovered the clone army being produced on Kamino, landed on Geonosis while tracking Jango Fett, the bounty hunter responsible for attempting to assassinate Senator Padme Amidala. Jango Fett eluded Kenobi on the barren desert world, but instead Kenobi discovered something even more important. Count Dooku, leader of the Confederacy of Independant Systems, was signing a military alliance with leaders from many galactic mega-corporations, including the Techno Union, Commerce Guild, and the Trade Federation. As per the treaty, these corporations committed their battle droid armies and droid designs to the CIS. Geonosian factories were building thousands of battle droids. Dooku was building the largest droid army in history, and intended to use it to force the Republic to surrender to the CIS' demands. During his attempt to warn the Galactic Republic's leadership about the imminent threat, Kenobi was ambushed and captured by a Droideka. The Jedi Council sent a group of Jedi to rescue Kenobi, along with Anakin Skywalker and Senator Amidala, who had been captured while trying to save Kenobi. The strike team arrived while Kenobi, Amidala and Skywalker were being executed in an arena. The Jedi were outnumbered by battle droids and had many losses, until Master Yoda arrived with the clone army.
