The Battle of Ilum was a battle in the Galactic Civil War that was part of the effort to track down the Imperial traitor Moff Kalast.
During the First Battle of Thyferra, an Imperial search team discovered pirate insignias on the weapons of Kalast's soldiers. A group of pirates had been supplying Kalast with the weapons, in exchange for information on cargo routes, and therefore they could have information on his current whereabouts.
After being distracted by an insurrection on Fondor, Darth Vader continued his search. The Empire intercepted a transmission from Ilum, from which they concluded the pirates are based on the planet.
The planet had heavy defenses installed, so Vader hired Boba Fett to use his stealth skills as the pilot of the Slave I to slip through their defenses and destroy the sensor pods, allowing the Imperial Navy to move in.
With this done, the Imperial fleet was free to pursue the pirate leader, who tried to escape in his Pirate interceptor cruiser. Boba Fett hit a blow to the pirate's engines before he could jump to hyperspace, and the leader surrendered himself.
With the pirate leader held hostage, an army landed on Ilum and claimed territory on the ice planet. The main pirate army resisted, but was destroyed in the ensuing skirmish.
Their leader supplied the Galactic Empire with more information on Moff Kalast.
