During the Great Galactic War, the isolated planet of Ilum was attacked and seized by the Sith Empire. For centuries, the world was known only to the Galactic Republic's Jedi Order, for whom it served as a sanctuary and holy planet. The adherents of the Order built a number of temples on the surface, to serve as shelters and places of meditation for those who made the dangerous pilgrimage to Ilum. In the midst of the Great War, the Sith discovered Ilum's existence and began an effort to seize the world. The battle for control of the planet was short lived; a strong force of Sith invaders and their troopers arrived on Ilum and quickly killed the few Jedi who were on planet. The loss was a major blow to the Order, but the over-extended Republic was unable to retaliate on behalf of the Jedi. After defiling their enemy's temples, the Sith began to move unprecedented resources to the planet, leading both the Jedi Order and the leadership of the Republic to believe that the world had been more valuable than they had previously thought.
