"The Republic would have its people believe their enemies are heartless droids. We are not droids. We are farmers, and menders, builders and healers. We are fathers, brothers, mothers, and sisters who have been forced to take up arms to challenge a selfish and corrupt government. The emotionless cultists of the Jedi order and their vat-grown drones are fighting a widowless war. We fight for our lifeblood, our heritage, and our soil. Your planet, your home, is flooded with blood. For three thousand years, we were loyal to the Republic. But did they send aid during the Brainrot Plague? Did they react when the Trandoshans invaded? Where were the Jedi when Lythian Pirates killed your parents and mine? The Republic ignored our cries for help until they learned that beneath all the mud our planet has a heart of ore! We will fight to defend our planet! We will send the Jedi home in body bags!"
―Alto Stratus[14]

The Battle of Jabiim was a major battle of the Clone Wars between the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic that took place on the planet Jabiim in 22 BBY. The Republic intervened in a civil war that had raged on the planet for some months in order to preserve its vital economic interests in Jabiimi mining, and the Confederacy supported an anti-Republic Jabiimi faction with arms and droid soldiers.

The Republic task force initially made significant gains, but overextended its limited resources, and the Confederates, led by Alto Stratus and Dark Jedi Asajj Ventress, quickly gained the upper hand. Suffering heavy losses and pursued by the Separatists, the remaining Republic forces retreated to the southern hemisphere of the planet.

Only the valiant last stand of a quickly formed battle group of clone troopers and Jedi Padawans prevented a total rout by tying up large Separatist forces for several days in the battle of Cobalt Station, buying the remnants of the Republic task force enough time to evacuate off the planet.

Prelude[]

"A war on Jabiim would be a dirty war in which our forces would have to battle with the elements as well as the droid armies of the Confederacy. There will be Republic casualties, I'm afraid, and it is my fervent hope that such costly campaign can be avoided."
―Bail Prestor Organa, HoloNet News Core Edition report[15]

Prior to the Clone Wars, Alto Stratus served as a commander in the Bronze Nimbus, one of several special forces units in the Jabiimi Military. When he became disillusioned with the cowardice of the Jabiim Army and the lack of assistance from the Republic and the Jedi, he brought Bronze Nimbus into his personal command, drawing elements of the Jabiim Army into his cult of personality.[12]

By the time the Clone Wars broke out, now the leader of the Jabiimi Nationalists, Alto Stratus, had consolidated the special forces as the Nimbus commandos and took over the ruling Jabiim Congress in a coup. Key members of the Congress were assassinated by the Nimbus commandos,[12] including most of the Loyalist members.[8] Stratus then used his influence to ally Jabiim with the Confederacy of Independent Systems[12] which made the planet a political and military hotspot.[15] After this act of treason, civil war broke out between Stratus' Nationalist faction and the remaining Jabiimi Loyalists, led by Captain Orliss Gillmunn.[8] However, Gilmunn had negligible resources, thus his resistance was weak.[16] In order to maintain public order during this time, Stratus had consolidated the regular military, now known as the Nationalist Army. He also had the Nimbus commandos destroy armories and soften up the Jabiimi Loyalists so that the Nationalist Army could engage the Loyalists in battle on an equal footing.[12]

Handooine

A Grand Army of the Republic corps on Handooine prior to being deployed on Jabiim.

After Supreme Chancellor Palpatine authorized the use of force to protect the Republic loyalists from Stratus' aggression,[1] the Republic positioned their strike force on nearby Handooine for rapid deployment from there to Jabiim at a moment's notice.[15] Jabiim would later become a field test for the Republic's newest walker, the All Terrain Armored Transport, or AT-AT. These four-legged behemoths packed enough firepower to decimate any Armored Assault Tank or spider droid.[1] Hundreds of All Terrain Armored Transport, All Terrain Tactical Enforcer, and All Terrain Experimental Transport walkers were being carefully prepared and maintained there. In addition, multiple Republic gunships and numerous clone troopers were also present on the planet, with the arrival of[15] the Acclamator-class assault ship[17] Dominance and its troops bringing the number of soldiers on Handooine up to an entire corps.[15]

The Jabiimite Spokesbeing Alto Stratus had rebuffed the Republic appeals during the last-hour negotiations spearheaded by the Alderaanian Diplomatic Corps in the Caucus Chambers of the Congress as Jabiim geared towards war. In an address to his followers, Alto Stratus sneered at the Republic's massing of forces in the neighboring Handooine system during negotiations for a peaceful settlement. The morning after the talks broke down, the Vice Chair Mas Amedda believed the native Jabiimi weren't open to the peaceful settlement of the conflict during an abbreviated Senate session. Republic officials, therefore, have described a war on Jabiim as "inevitable." When the Galactic Senate learned of the Republic Intelligence reports that the Congress had been supplied provisions, weapons, and credits to destroy the vocal loyalists by the Confederacy, they sought to extradite politically persecuted Loyalists and mineral resources that they owned.[15] Many in the Republic also believed Jabiim had been bought out by the CIS.[18]

A HoloNet News Core Edition report on the situation on Handooine and Jabiim was transmitted from the former planet's[15] capital city, Jelwick.[19] In it, the Senator of Ryloth Orn Free Taa was quoted as saying that the "silver-tongued holocam-favorite" Alto Stratus was being deceived by the Separatists to seize more ore to build their forces. He said that the Republic would not allow the mineral resources to fall into the Separatist possession. Senator Bail Prestor Organa stated that he wished and hoped that the casualties of the impending war could be avoided.[15] Shortly thereafter, Jedi General Obi-Wan Kenobi had been assigned as theater commander for the campaign.[2] The news report estimated that it was likely the invasion of Jabiim would occur within a standard month,[15] and the operation indeed began in 22 BBY.[20]

The battle[]

Initial advancement[]

"So far we've destroyed a dozen outposts, but we're no closer to finding Stratus or any of his Confederacy hardware."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi[8]

The Republic forces established a stronghold at Shelter Base and proceeded to launch attacks on Separatist defensive positions in pursuit of the Separatist commander Alto Stratus. Aided by Captain Gillmunn's Loyalist forces, the task force overran a dozen enemy defensive positions[8] with little resistance from the enemy[21] and no indication of Stratus' whereabouts or any evidence of his Confederacy hardware.[8] During this time, the Jabiimite Separatists employed only native soldiers and equipment,[2] while holding back their battle droid forces. As part of his plan, Alto Stratus allowed the Republic to take the number of positions to divide their forces.[21]

AT-ATJabiim

First-generation AT-ATs attack Outpost Shear.

In the next week, they attacked a third defensive position known as Outpost Shear after Camp Aurek and Point Down were captured.[2] General Obi-Wan Kenobi,[8] his First Lieutenant Anakin Skywalker,[22] and ARC trooper Alpha-17 led an attack on the outpost using the first-generation AT-ATs, AT-TEs, and AT-XTs. As they overran the main emplacement, Alpha-17 suggested to Kenobi to flank the enemy to prevent their retreat.[8] Not prepared for the savagery of the fighting at Jabiim,[21] Jedi Master Sirrus and his Padawan Aubrie Wyn, one of the Jedi Temple's best healers, joined the advance at the Outpost Shear looking for General Kenobi. On her Master's motion, Wyn healed a wounded Nationalist soldier,[8] which left her wondering if the Jedi were soldiers or doctors.[21] On Kenobi's orders, Padawans Kass Tod and Mak Lotor of the so-called Padawan Pack ambushed the retreating soldiers as they fled along the flanks of the main column of the Republic army.[8] Within days[1] the outpost was captured, and Alpha-17 intended to interrogate the prisoners on Stratus' whereabouts, while Obi-Wan Kenobi ordered to regroup at their camp.[8]

As the Republic forces regrouped at their camp, Kenobi briefed the newly arrived Master Sirrus on the situation on Jabiim. Meanwhile, Alto Stratus gave a powerful speech to rally his troops that delivered vehemently anti-Republican rhetoric. He cited the past record of Republic apathy during the events such as Brainrot Plague, Trandoshan invasion, and Lythian pirate raids.[8] A local Jabiimite freedom fighter recorded Stratus' speech in a hologram with a runtime of twelve standard minutes.[14] While the Jedi watched Stratus's speech through the hologram, Alpha-17 expressed concern that the main force was more than a day's journey from Shelter Base and that the Nationalists would find out and exploit this vulnerability.[8]

Battle of Shelter Base[]

"We strike now. We won't get another chance. Move in!"
―Alto Stratus[8]

Alto Stratus kept his forces, which included B1-Series battle droids, B2 super battle droids, IG-227 Hailfire-class droid tanks, and spider tanks, as well as his own elite Nimbus commandos, in reserve for a strike on the now-vulnerable Shelter Base.[21] Republic Intelligence reports had failed to detect the Confederacy military equipment, while long-range orbital scanning has been hampered by atmospheric disturbances, which resulted in incomplete intelligence. Taking advantage of the night storm that disrupted the sensors,[2] Stratus launched a massive attack on the Shelter Base.[21] Hailfire-class droid tanks unleashed volleys of the tanksmasher missiles into the compound,[2] one of them obliterating a Republic AT-AT walker.[21]

Jabiim3

Meanwhile, the Republic's situation grew increasingly difficult as several AT-TEs were hampered by the muddy surfaces. However, one of the Jedi Generals did not allow a clone trooper to call down the gunship air support due to the planet's atmospheric disturbances. Instead, she decided to pull out the AT-TE with the Force, but was stabbed to death by Stratus who crept up behind. A few moments later, Skywalker, Kenobi, Alpha, Sirrus and Wyn arrived with the reinforcements at the site of the battle in a landspeeder. Skywalker confronted him, and Stratus felt it necessary to retreat. Alpha and Kenobi moved in to protect the walkers, including one AT-AT, that Kenobi intended to use to cover the right flank.[8]

Along with Stratus, the Nimbus commandos retreated, who, despite the repulsor boots that allowed them to skate above the muddy surfaces and their success in destroying heavy equipment, were unable to deal with the garrison of the Shelter Base. Before retreating,[8] they planted limpet charges[12] which broke the legs of one of the walkers. While Skywalker secured his part of the base with the help of Wyn, Kenobi, Sirrus, and Alpha hurried to the AT-AT to rescue the clones from there. Suddenly, the AT-AT exploded, and Kenobi, Sirrus, and Alpha, who did not have time to run away from the place of the explosion,[8] were included in Jabiim's list of victims.[10] While Sirrus perished,[23] Kenobi and Alpha survived, but were captured by the Separatist commander Asajj Ventress who transported them to Rattatak.[3]

At one point, a HoloNet News Core Edition report on the attack that was transmitted from the Shelter Base communicated dozens of casualties, including the three Jedi Dalnus Cam, Sana-Jis Ilowa, and Rallcema Bylissura, thirty-two members of the 43rd Battalion, and a possible loss of the theater commander Obi-Wan Kenobi. Because the contact with the HoloNet News field correspondent Angus Laride has been lost, the HoloNet News were unable to verify his death.[2]

Despite data-interception efforts by Republic Intelligence, bootleg holograms of Alto Stratus' speech prior to the attack on Shelter Base found their way off Jabiim and spread throughout neighboring Outer Rim sectors. A CIS Shadowfeed dispatch on the popularity of Alto Stratus was transmitted via the Outer Rim node. In it, Alto Stratus was lauded as a folk hero among Outer Rim Separatist worlds, despite many of the points of his speech being unique to Jabiim's struggle. On Clak'dor VII, famed Bith musician Vennido T'all composed an original song that contained samples from Stratus' speech. On Yag'Dhul, his words were mathematically converted into a fractal banner in the First Temple of Prime. The Aqualish incorporated variations of his speech into their literature and war-chants.[2]

Battle of Choal[]

"The Jedi have brought only suffering to our world. But I swear that every Jedi on Jabiim will soon know our pain!"
―Alto Stratus[10]
NorcunaDeath

At some point, Stratus lost his female cousin—who had been shot in the gut with a blaster, and then, as she crawled through the mud, her legs were crushed by a Republic walker. Severely injured, she died in Stratus' arms, whose resolve to destroy the Jedi solidified.[10]

Over the course of the next week, Stratus's forces made significant gains in the northern hemisphere. On the twenty-eighth day, he attacked the forces at the city of Choal. The forces under the command of the General Norcuna were wiped, and the Twi'lek Jedi was beheaded by Stratus himself.[10]

Republic supply column and the Battle of Razor Coast[]

"Our intelligence has located Stratus on the Razor Coast. If we capture him, the rest of the Jabiimi Separatists might surrender."
―Orliss Gillmunn[10]

After the presumed death of Obi-Wan Kenobi[2] and the death of Sirrus,[23] Anakin Skywalker and Aubrie Wyn received a transfer to the Padawan Pack,[10] a group of orphaned Padawans bunched together in a hope that several of them would be equal to one Jedi Knight.[1] This group also included Humans Tae Diath, and Mak Lotor, the Zabrak Kass Tod, the Aqualish Windo "Warble" Nend, the Sullustan Elora Sund, the Falleen Zule Xiss and the Gand Vaabesh.[13] Following Norcuna's death, command of the Republic forces fell to General Leska—now the highest-ranking Jedi on the planet. By the thirtieth day of battle, Captain Gillmunn estimated that eighteen Jedi and nine thousand clone troopers had been killed in action. That same day, Gillmunn reported that their intelligence had located Stratus on the Razor Coast. He also believed that perhaps with their leader captured, the other Separatists might surrender. General Leska ordered to mobilize the troops for an immediate strike at the Razor Coast in an attempt to capture Stratus; she ordered the Padawan Pack to avoid the front lines and protect a supply convoy headed toward the Cobalt Station, as she refused to send more Padawans to their deaths.[10]

Padawanpack2

By the thirty-second day of battle, the Republic lost three forward positions. On the same day, while guarding a convoy of AT-XTs and AT-TEs, the Padawans were attacked by Stratus's droid forces. Several members of the Pack battled against the droids while Wyn and Nend remained with the convoy. Knowing that the battle droids were single-minded, the Padawans distracted them with an obvious target before launching a successful ambush. The tactic, which had been developed by Skywalker and his Master, repelled the droids and allowed the Padawans to get the convoy moving once more. Despite the victory, Xiss remained pessimistic of the situation, citing that even the most advanced Padawan, Mak Lotor, was inexperienced in war.[10]

Later, Wyn and Skywalker were supplying equipment to Republic outposts to prevent the enemy from taking them. Wyn was adjusting well, but Anakin was having a much harder time. Kenobi's presumed death had clearly had a bad effect on Skywalker: he had become unstable and reckless, which was clearly felt by the other Padawans, especially Tae Diath, who had well-developed telepathic abilities. Later, Nend attempted to make conversation with the female Falleen Zule Xiss, only to be met with Xiss's frustration over their situation; the Gand male Vaabesh helped Nend to understand Xiss's history and reasons for defensiveness—a Padawan who had bounced from Master to Master, Xiss had seen her final and most effective mentor killed in the same battle in which she had been previously maimed. To avoid more unexpected attacks by Stratus's forces, a machine piloted by Kass Tod and Mak Lotor was sent ahead to scan the area. Mak Lotor confessed his love to Kass Tod, stating there was the Force, death and love. The scanning revealed neither any threats nor the fact that the convoy was headed straight for the minefield.[10]

By the thirty-third day of battle, on the Razor Coast, Colonel Mazzi reported to Stratus that their intelligence spotted the Republic supply column heading towards Cobalt Station escorted by a group of Jedi children, which was carrying much-needed reinforcements and material. Upon learning that a minefield lay in the path of the Padawan Pack, Stratus decided to lead an attack on the convoy personally, and ordered to assemble the Nimbus commandos.[10]

By the thirty-fourth day of battle, as the Separatists had expected, the convoy was led into a minefield when one of the AT-XTs stepped onto the mine, which neutralized most of its armoured support. The Jedi were unprepared for this sort of ambush, as it was the first time the Confederacy used mines in combat, and suffered heavy losses. Elora Sund used a Nimbus repulsor skate to take out several of them with a blaster and cover her companions' retreat. The Republic force was eventually able to break through thanks to the Jedi, who used the Force to detonate some of the mines, distracting the Separatists and clearing a path out.[10] At the height of the battle, Mak Lotor used the Force to trigger a minor earth tremor that set off all of the remaining mines,[13] which made him pass out.[10] As the mines exploded, Skywalker found himself within distance of Stratus. However, before he could kill the Separatist leader, a mine exploded beneath them and they were hurled away from each other. Skywalker tried to stand up with the help of Vaabesh, who then took him to safety.[13]

Battle of Razor Coast

General Leska's victory at the Razor Coast.

By the thirty-fifth day of battle, the Republic defeated the Separatist forces on the Razor Coast but suffered heavy casualties, and Stratus was nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Stratus also recovered from his injuries with the help of Mazzi and gathered his forces for a final, decisive attack on Cobalt Station, the Republic's last major defensive installation on the planet.[10]

Battle of Cobalt Station[]

"I wasn't supposed to die here, I was supposed to train with Master Windu, on Coruscant. My Master said I was destined for the Jedi Council."
―Aubrie Wyn[11]

Having suffered heavy losses, General Leska decided it was time to head inland to protect the Padawan Pack. By the thirty-seventh day of battle, Leska was distracted by a bright sun peeking out from behind the clouds. Before she could reach the Pack, her troops were ambushhed and she was killed. As she was dying, Leska ordered the Padawans to flee. The nine Padawans, the only remaining Jedi on Jabiim still capable of fighting, took refuge in Cobalt Station, where they met a rare hour on the planet without rain. Standing on the shore of the lake, the Jedi saw the Separatist fleet in the sky, which flew right next to them and continued to move towards Stratus's camp.[11]

Jabiim assasin droids

A-series assassin droids — the reinforcements sent to Alto Stratus.

The fleet, represented by C-9979 landing crafts, brought reinforcements to the Jabiimi Nationalists: A-series assassin droids under the command of A71, which were modified specifically for duty on Jabiim, had high artificial intelligence, and were trained in all methods of inflicting death. Stratus was pleased with the Count Dooku's "gift" and announced to his fighters that today he would make the Jedi suffer.[11]

Meanwhile, Captain Gillmunn contacted Cobalt Station and informed the Padawans that his Jabiimi Loyalists and surviving clone troopers were gathering on the Monsoon Mesa south of the Cobalt Station,[11] as the Republic High Command,[1] finally losing hope of victory, announced the start of the evacuation. The Padawans were also informed that General Leska had gone missing and that they were now the highest ranking members of the Grand Army of the Republic on Jabiim. Unfortunately for the clones, the Republic transports were temporarily unable to land due to adverse weather conditions, and Stratus, wasting no time, had already assembled an army of ten thousand, ready to completely crush the enemy. The only thing that separated the evacuation zone and the Stratus's army was the Cobalt Station. The Padawans realized that the successful outcome of the evacuation would depend on how long they delayed Stratus's army. Although the fight with the Separatist forces was essentially suicide, all the Jedi, including Anakin, prompted by a speech from Aubrie Wyn, decided to do it. The nine Padawans began to prepare for their final battle, mobilizing all combat-ready equipment and surviving clones.[11]

At the very last moment, Skywalker received a message from Supreme Chancellor Palpatine and was ordered to evacuate along with the rest of the Republic forces. Skywalker didn't want to abandon his fellow Padawans, but the Chancellor convinced Anakin that they would die anyway, with or without him. Skywalker eventually succumbed to Palpatine's arguments and left Cobalt Station on his Zephyr-G swoop. Aubrie Wyn, a witness to Anakin's conversation with the Chancellor, was sympathetic to Skywalker's decision and, before leaving, the Padawan asked him to take the holocron of her deceased teacher, Sirrus, with him. On the thirty-ninth day after the start of the battle, Alto Stratus's forces attacked Cobalt Station, intending to wipe it out.[11]

Alto and Aubrie death

Aubrie Wyn and Alto Stratus kill each other.

The battle between the Nationalists and the clones led by the Padawans lasted for four days and ended with the complete annihilation of the Cobalt Station garrison. All of the Padawans fought desperately, but were eventually slaughtered: Tae Diath was the first to die, shot dead by the assassin droids, followed by Elora Sund and Windo Nend, who blew himself up along with an IG-227 Hailfire-class tank droid. Zule Xiss, who unleashed her unstoppable fury during the battle, died, crushed by an AT-AT that crashed down on her. Mak Lotor and Kass Tod engaged Alto Stratus himself and wounded him, but were blown up by a tank droid missile. Vaabesh died on day 43, having received a hole in his protective suit, without which he could not breathe; Aubrie Wyn, the last surviving Padawan, took his lightsaber with the permission of the dying Padawan. With all the assassin droids and most of the Nimbus commandos destroyed, Wyn located Stratus and was about to finish him off, but he mortally wounded her with a blaster shot. The dying Padawan collapsed on top of the Jabiimite and stabbed him with both lightsabers, ending his military career and life as well.[11]

Evacuation[]

"Blast you for proving Stratus right! We risked everything for the Republic, and now you abandon us?"
―Orliss Gillmunn, to Anakin Skywalker[3]
SWREP58-FC

Commander Anakin Skywalker evacuates his troops from Jabiim.

As the Padawan Pack gave their lives in combat with Stratus,[11] Anakin Skywalker raced to the evacuation site on his swoop, as Palpatine had requested. By the forty-third day of the battle, he arrived at his destination and met with Captain Gillmunn, his Loyalists, and the surviving clones. Although weather conditions continued to be poor, three Republic transports attempted to land on the planet's surface; only one of them managed to do it. However, the Republic did not have enough ships to take both the clones and the Loyalists off Jabiim. The decision on how to proceed with the evacuation had to be made within one hour as the weather continued to deteriorate, and Anakin, as the only viable Jedi on Jabiim, made the decision. He ordered all clones to be evacuated and the abandoned the Loyalists to their fate.[3]

Gillmunn was shocked by the betrayal of the Republic. Now he realized that Alto Stratus and the Nationalists had been right. Enraged, the captain slapped Skywalker in the face and accused the Republic of burning the planet in their relentless war. Gillmunn and his men were about to confiscate the Republic transports, but were stopped by Anakin, who began strangling the captain with the Force. After releasing Gillmunn, Anakin apologized to him for his outburst of anger, and, taking advantage of the confusion of the loyalists, hastened to withdraw the remnants of the GAR from the planet. They were followed by the curses of the enraged Jabiimi, who promised to take revenge on the Republic for its betrayal.[3]

Aftermath[]

"In a battle between those fighting for a political principle, and those fighting for the survival of their home and family, the latter usually win in the long run. They've got nothing more to lose, and it makes them terrible enemies. Like us."
―Jabiimi Nationalist commander, on the nature of fighting the Republic on Jabiim[24]

The Republic was ill-prepared for the atrocious conditions on Jabiim, whereas the Jabiimi rebels had lived there all their lives. The task force's heavy walkers became mired in the muddy, rain-soaked plains, where they were vulnerable to the agile Nimbus commandos, while the constant storms and heavy raining severely impeded their much-needed orbital and air support.[8] Even Republic radio communications and sensors were scrambled by the turbulent atmospheric conditions. Thus the rebels could time and again defeat the Republic despite its superior numbers and firepower.[source?]

After the Republic left Jabiim, it finally ended up in the hands of the Confederacy of Independent Systems. During the battle on the surface of the planet, the Republic lost 27 Jedi,[source?] at least 9,000 clone troopers,[13] two transports,[3] and many AT-ATs, whose trial-by-fire did not go well.[8][11] During the time of the Galactic Empire, however, AT-ATs became the mainstay in the Imperial Army.[25] The losses of the enemy were also considerable, although inferior to those of the Republic:[11] about five thousand of the ten thousand-strong Nationalist Army died,[source?] many battle droids were destroyed, including all of the A-series assassin droids. Also lost were most of the Nimbus commandos,[11] who, after the death of Alto Stratus, were led by Colonel Mazzi.[12]

Angered by what he saw as betrayal, Captain Orliss Gillmunn rallied the surviving Loyalists and continued the fight. In 21 BBY,[6][7] Orliss and Nolan Gillmunn planned an attack on the droid command center in Hyber Canyon.[26] Olriss was stabbed to death with a blade by the Jabiimi Nationalist Thorne Kraym during a massacre at High Rock Canyon. However, Nolan himself survived.[27]

PadawanPackMoths

Anakin Skywalker releases memory moths for the Padawan Pack.

The evacuated Republic forces were transported to the Mid Rim world of New Holstice, where all of the Jedi and clones injured in the battle were rehabilitated at a local medical center. Upon arrival on the planet, Skywalker met with Jedi Master A'Sharad Hett and his Padawan Bhat Jul, who took the young man to a memorial to all those Jedi who died for the Republic. Memory moths fluttered near the memorial, each representing a fallen Jedi, and Anakin added several more to them, in memory of the fallen members of the Padawan Pack. Skywalker, Jul, and Hett were soon approached by Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi, who informed Skywalker that he would accompany them to the new front on Aargonar.[3] During the battle, Mundi refused to retreat, stating that the Republic could not afford another loss like that of Jabiim without further star systems seceding to the Separatists.[28]

It was in the panic following the battle that the 501st Legion was deployed to Coruscant.[29] After the battle, Mundi was given Skywalker's training. Shortly thereafter, during a Senate meeting, the two reported on the success on Aargonar. Palpatine emphasized the merit of the young Padawan. When Bail Organa then asked about the defeat at Jabiim, Senate Speaker Mas Amedda told him that the issue had been discussed in his absence and referred him to Archive File 395873X555. However, since the file contained only a brief note about the battle, Organa approached the Supreme Chancellor at a private meeting in his office shortly thereafter. He believed that as a member of parliament he had to know all the facts about the war in order to be able to fulfill his duties. Palpatine did note, however, that in the face of setbacks like the one on Jabiim, other less brave senators like himself might join the Separatists. Shortly thereafter, Senator Ask Aak referred to the Jedi Council's account of the devastating battle of Parcelus Minor as another Jabiim. Senator Mon Mothma, who was also present, strongly rejected his accusation that the Jedi were merely playing into the hands of their former member, Dooku, urging him instead to encourage open debate on Parcelus Minor and Jabiim in the Senate to resolve such issues. However, Aak, recognizing her attempt to further Organa's still unsupported cause, declared that he trusted the Chancellor, not the Jedi, on this issue.[5]

Ventress held Kenobi and Alpha-17 captive on Rattatak. In doing so, she attempted to break the Jedi Master, claiming that all troops on Jabiim, including his Padawan, had been wiped out by the Separatists.[3] In the weeks that followed, she attempted to extract strategic information about the Republic through torture. However, Kenobi managed to free himself and the clone trooper and escape from Rattatak in Ventress's ship.[30] Shortly thereafter, they were forced to crash-land on Riflor. As Skywalker kept having nightmares from Kenobi's loss, Mundi tried to help him process the loss. Skywalker's hope that he was still alive, since his body was never recovered, was countered by the fact that he had also lost family members in the Battle of Cerea, whose bodies he had later been unable to identify, and still came to terms with his loss. During an altercation in the orbit of Varonat, Skywalker received a vision of Kenobi, which he took as proof that he was, in fact, still alive. He then went to Riflor with Mundi and rescued him and Alpha-17.[31]

Legacy[]

The Battle of Jabiim went down in history as the most savage confrontation of the Clone Wars up to that point,[21] with few battles being as horrifying as the one that took place on Jabiim. Over the years it became notorious for the number of the Jedi Masters that were slain.[32] It also left a legacy of enduring hatred among the Jabiimi people of the Republic that had betrayed them in their hour of need, the Jedi, and most of all the name of the betrayer Skywalker.[source?]

Despite being reunited with his master, Skywalker's emotional wounds never healed as the war progressed.[source?] At the Battle of Zaadja, Skywalker expressed doubts to his master that a young Jedi Master like Tohno would be sent on such a dangerous mission, since the many young Padawans on Jabiim had not been up to the challenge. However, Kenobi explained to him that the war required such risks from the Jedi.[33] When he was awarded the honorary title of Warrior of the Infinite on Virujansi, journalists also wanted to ask him about his experiences on Jabiim and Kamino, which HoloNet News called heroic deeds. However, Kenobi excused him due to other pressing matters.[34] The Battle of Jabiim was later often cited as an example of Skywalker's bravery, even though he had abandoned his friends against his will.[35] The clone trooper Zeer noted during the Battle of Teth, when he and the few survivors of his unit had holed up in the wreckage of an AT-TE and were able to hold out for a long time, that they would have been already overrun on Jabiim and their heads would have been impaled on stakes.[24] Jai Maruk recognized the assassin droids mentioned in Anakin Skywalker's account of the Battle of Jabiim on Phindar when he was attacked at the local spaceport.[36] The memories of the battle fueled Skywalker's anger as he immersed himself in the Force.[37] Kenobi remarked to his student that after the experiences on Jabiim he shed his cocky grin and tried to distract himself with flying.[38] Skywalker believed he was overcoming the fear that drove him to the dark side at the memory of Jabiim when he killed Dooku at the Battle of Coruscant.[38]

22 years later, the disastrous events of the battle would come back to haunt the Rebel Alliance, who were fighting against the Galactic Empire, when the Jabiimi, having never forgotten the betrayal of Anakin Skywalker, nearly executed Anakin's son, Luke Skywalker and his allies in a mob, although they were later forced to cooperate with Luke after they were attacked by the Empire. Anakin, unbeknownst to them, was also involved in the battle among the aggressors, in which Anakin, rechristened as Darth Vader and still feeling immense guilt over his earlier abandonment of the Jabiimi, ended up trying to ease the remorse by ordering a bombardment that wiped out a large amount of the population.[39]

Engagements[]

Behind the scenes[]

The Battle of Jabiim first appeared in the 2003 comic book Republic 55, written by W. Haden Blackman and pencilled by Brian Ching.[8] While Republic 55 originally established the battle to have occurred fifteen months after the Battle of Geonosis, changes to the timeline of the Clone Wars necessitated by the Star Wars: The Clone Wars multimedia project moved the battle back to 22 BBY.[6]
