In the late 50s BBY,[2] the Melida, one of the two warring factions on the planet Melida/Daan along with the Daan, invaded the village where the Daan child Nield was living with his cousin at the time. His cousin escaped the village, taking Nield with her to the city of Zehava.[1] Later, in 44 BBY,[3] Nield's friend Cerasi would recount the struggles of his childhood, including this battle, to Jedi Padawan Obi-Wan Kenobi.[1]

This battle is briefly mentioned in the 1999 young readers book The Defenders of the Dead, the fifth entry in Jude Watson's Jedi Apprentice young readers series.[1]

- ↑ 2.0 2.1 The Essential Reader's Companion places the events of Jedi Apprentice: The Defenders of the Dead at 44 BBY, and page 54 of Defenders of the Dead indicates that at that time, Nield is approximately the same age as Obi-Wan Kenobi, who is stated to be thirteen years old on the back cover of Defenders of the Dead. Page 65 of The Defenders of the Dead lists four battles that affected Nield's childhood. The first one is identified as occurring when Nield was five years old and therefore in approximately 52 BBY, the second is noted to be one month after the first, and the fourth occurs when Nield is eight (c. 49 BBY). This article describes the third battle, for which the only indication of time is a statement that Nield had "a few peaceful years" between this battle and the fourth. Dictionary.com defines "few" as being "not many but more than one", so at least two years must elapse between this battle and the fourth, but this one cannot occur before the first two. Therefore, this battle must take place no earlier than immediately after the second battle on page 65, but no later than one year after that battle and two years before the fourth.
