The title of this article is conjectural.

Although this article is based on official information from the Star Wars Legends continuity, the actual name of this subject is pure conjecture.

Ben Kenobi's hut was the residence of Ben Kenobi, alias of Obi-Wan Kenobi, from 19 BBY to 0 BBY.

It was located at the southwestern edge of Tatooine's Dune Sea, approximately 136 kilometers from the Lars homestead,[2] at standard coordinates Alpha-1733-Mu-9033 of the first quadrant in the Tatooine navigation system. Made out of synstone, it comprised a large room that was divided into a living room and a raised kitchen, and a bathroom as a separate room. A cellar contained a power generator and water, and could be entered via a trapdoor. During his nineteen-year stay, Obi-Wan added many of its comforts.

History[]

Kenobis hut layout

The layout of Kenobi's hut

The original dwelling had probably been constructed by a transient who had looked to become a moisture farmer or trade with the Jawas but eventually abandoned it. Obi-Wan found it when he began his exile on the desert planet. After riding his eopie in a widening circle around the Lars homestead, he found a small hut close enough to the Lars farm so he could watch over Luke Skywalker, but far enough away so he could be considered a hermit and nobody would take much note of him. He kept recordings containing information about the Jedi there, as well as the supplies and equipment needed to create new lightsabers.

In 1 ABY,[3] Jabba the Hutt's beast master Malakili recruited a spacer to explore and search the hut. The spacer found a fossilized resonance chamber from a krayt dragon that Obi-Wan Kenobi used to terrify Tusken Raiders.[4]

Following his escape from Cloud City, Luke Skywalker lived there for several weeks.

Following the end of the Galactic Civil War, Obi-Wan's hut was made into an attraction of the Skywalker Tour, having been rediscovered and restored by Myhr Rho. In 9 ABY, after Leia Organa Solo allowed the Force to draw her to the hut, she found it ransacked, void of everything save for Kenobi's workbench and a mysterious datapad in the cellar. In 12 ABY, Luke Skywalker returned to the hut in an unsuccessful attempt to reestablish a connection with his long-dead mentor. When he arrived, the hut was in nearly the same state as his sister had found it, save for the fact that the roof had caved in.

Luke Skywalker's new droid, R2-D2, brought him into pursuit of a General Kenobi. Luke located Kenobi's residence in a cave colloquially known as Obi-Wan's Cave for the desert hermit living within. Luke evaded the dangerous pitfalls and rampant sand flies to speak with Obi-Wan Kenobi. Kenobi subsequently gifted Luke his father's lightsaber and became his spiritual guide during the Rebellion's assault on the Death Star.[5]

Behind the scenes[]

In the A New Hope novelization, Ben Kenobi's home was located in a cave rather than the hut seen in the movie. This depiction of Kenobi's home being a cave rather than a hut is seen in JVC's 1991 Star Wars video game.

The original movie was filmed in an old harbor in south Tunisia. Long ago the harbor moved 3 kilometers south, forming the town Ajim. The house is still used as a meeting place, and therefore is regularly renovated. For the 1997 Special Edition of the film, the shot has been replaced with a combination model/digital matte painting of a larger hut.

  2. The Life and Legend of Obi-Wan Kenobi
  3. According to its opening crawl, Star Wars Galaxies was set sometime after Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. The only precise time indication in the game was given by the character Ruwan Tokai, who referenced the destruction of the Death Star at the Battle of Yavin as occurring one year earlier, placing the game sometime around 1 ABY. Later, multiple elements confirmed the placement of the game storyline in 1 ABY. First, The Essential Reader's Companion established that the tie-in novel Star Wars Galaxies: The Ruins of Dantooine took place in 1 ABY. Furthermore, the game expansion Star Wars Galaxies: Rage of the Wookiees was set during the Blockade of Kashyyyk, one year after the Battle of Yavin according to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Additionally, the main scenario of The Nightsister's Revenge from the Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game was set over a year before the Battle of Hoth (3 ABY), so around 1.5 ABY. Finally, the reference book Strongholds of Resistance placed the events of Star Wars Galaxies's Chapter 9: "The Fury of Exar Kun" one year after the Battle of Yavin. Of note, Galaxies's Chapter 11: "The Battle of Echo Base" introduced the Battle of Hoth in the game. However, the developers were quite clear that this was only intended to be a completely isolated "Star Wars Moment" without any effect on continuity for the rest of the game.
