Bill Smith was the line editor for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game, and author of Star Wars:The Roleplaying Game, Second edition.

He was born in 1969, and by eighth grade was an avid roleplaying gamer. He received a bachelor's degree from the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York, and became an editor for a trade magazine. In November of 1990, Smith submitted his resume to West End Games at the suggestion of a friend, and his editing and gaming experience earned him a spot on the WEG staff.

He immediately set to work designing adventures for Torg, another WEG product, and then Cracken's Rebel Field Guide and several Star Wars adventure supplements. After he had worked at WEG for a year, he got the opportunity to create the Second edition, which saw publication in 1992. He later went on to write other books, including Alliance Intelligence Reports for West End Games, and The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels and The Essential Guide to Weapons and Technology for Del Rey.
