Blue Squad was a Rebel Alliance starfighter squadron that fought at the Battle of Endor, the decisive engagement of the Galactic Civil War between the Rebellion and the Galactic Empire. In that battle, Blue Squad was one of multiple RZ-1 A-wing interceptor squadrons that comprised the Alliance's Blue Wing attack element.[1]

In 4 ABY,[2] Rebel Alliance General Lando Calrissian launched an attack on the Empire' unshielded Death Star battlestation over the forest moon Endor, and called upon Blue Squad, along with Red and Gold Groups, to follow his starship the Millennium Falcon towards the station's reactor core. However, beset by Imperial TIE starfighters as he made his approach, Calrissian ordered the pilot "Blue Wing,"[3] coordinator of the attack group of the same name,[1] to break formation and draw away the enemy craft. Calrissian's assault was a success, destroying the Death Star,[3] while Blue Squad's efforts contributed to the Rebel victory over the Imperial fleet.[1]

Blue Squad first appeared in the novelization of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi by James Kahn,[3] published on May 12, 1983.[4] In addition to the Return of the Jedi novel, the 1984 reference book by Raymond L. Velasco A Guide to the Star Wars Universe also cites Star Wars: Return of the Jedi Portfolio as a source for its "Blue Squad" entry.[1] Although the squad is not identified by name in the portfolio, a collection of Ralph McQuarrie's concept art for the film released in 1983, one piece depicts a pair of A-wing starfighters with blue markings.[5]
