Shortly before the Battle of Yavin, the Galactic Empire bombarded the surface of the planet Gerrard V. It was an effort by the Galactic Empire to crush a group of revolting Alliance supporters, after Gerrard V revolted and declared its independence. The planet was bombarded by Star Destroyers, obliterating the Rebels. The bombardment also destroyed the planet's ecosystem, turning it into a desert. The planet would gain its independence later on, during the Liberation of Gerrard V.
