In 33 BBY, the moon Sojourn was devastated by a nuclear attack that was staged by King Ars Veruna of Naboo, in an attempt to kill his rival, IBC kingpin Hego Damask, alter ego of Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Plagueis. The attack destroyed Plagueis' residence on the moon and wiped out his entire contingent of Sun Guard mercenaries. However, Plagueis himself—to the great astonishment of the few who knew of the attack (especially Veruna)—evaded death during the bombardment, having been forewarned of the attack, and then rescued, by the Hutt crime lord Jabba Desilijic Tiure.

When Jabba advised Veruna of Damask's survival, the Naboo monarch promptly abdicated his throne and fled with his loyal bodyguard to what he believed to be the protective fortress of his family's ancient castle in Naboo's Western Reaches. But the Sith Lord had already sworn swift vengeance upon Veruna, Alexi Garyn's Black Sun crime syndicate, and the other conspirators who'd made an attempt on his life, and none were safe.
