|Usage and history|
A boomer, also known as a booma, was a grenade-type weapon used by the Gungans of Naboo. It consisted of a spherical protective shell that contained a quantity of liquid-like plasma. Those boomers could be thrown by hand, sling, atalatl, cesta or catapult. Upon impact, the shell would burst, releasing the plasma with a powerful electric shock. They came in different sizes, from boomers that could be hold in the palm to much larger models that had to be transported in carts.
Behind the scenesEdit
Boomers first appeared in the 1999 movie Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace, the first installment in the prequel trilogy of Star Wars. Industrial Light & Magic created them using the Sabre digital compositing system, which was also used to give the Gungan energy shield its glow, and illuminate the lightsaber blades of the Jedi.
