Bosun was the informal name attributed to a ship officer in charge of maintaining maximum efficiency of the bridge systems of a capital ship. Bosuns were also called upon to aid in more general duties, such as directing loadlifters. A bosun was attributed the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO). The Galactic Republic, the Galactic Empire and the Alliance to Restore the Republic all employed bosuns aboard starships.

"Bosun" is the phonetic spelling of the English "boatswain", a nautical term for a petty officer in charge of a ship's anchors, colors, deck crew and boats.
