Behind the scenesEdit
- "'The thinker' among aliens?"
- ―Star Wars: Chronicles caption of an image of "Alien 23," referencing the famous statue
As shown in the 1997 reference book Star Wars: Chronicles, the species' origins date back to the production stages of the 1983 film Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, as one of several alien maquettes constructed for possible usage in the scenes taking place in Jabba the Hutt's palace. The maquette, known as "Alien 23," was among those scrapped before the film's production. An accompanying image caption in Star Wars: Chronicles compared the alien to The Thinker, a famous, real-life statue. In 1998, a picture of the alien maquette was depicted in the Star Wars: Behind the Magic interactive CD-ROM. That same year, the Star Wars Customizable Card Game's Special Edition Limited set released the "Brangus Glee" card, which featured an image of the alien superimposed in a cantina background, thus bringing the species into canon.
