Brethupp was an Ewok who lived in Bright Tree Village on the forest moon of Endor. In 4 ABY, Brethupp was present in the village center when a group of rebel captives were brought in by a scouting party. The Ewok initially moved toward the prisoner Han Solo as the captives were being prepared as part of a banquet in honor of the protocol droid C-3PO, who the Ewoks thought was a deity, but after the prisoner Luke Skywalker lifted the droid into the air using the Force, Brethupp rushed to free the captives on the orders of the shaman Logray.

The Ewoks soon chose to aid the rebels in their fight against the Galactic Empire on Endor and fought alongside them the following day. After the alliance defeated the Imperials, festivities were held in the village during which Brethupp drummed on a series of Imperial helmets collected as trophies.

Biography[]

Brethupp[2] was an Ewok member of the Bright Tree tribe that dwelt in Bright Tree Village on the forest moon of Endor. In 4 ABY, Brethupp was present in the village center when a scouting group led by the Ewok Teebo returned to the village after having captured a group of rebel offworlders who had been caught in an Ewok net trap. Bound below wooden poles, the captives were set down in the village, with the smuggler Han Solo positioned above an unlit fire pit. Brethupp rushed to tend to the pit beneath Solo as C-3PO, a protocol droid ally of the captives that the Ewoks had mistaken for the deity known as the Golden One, was seated on a throne in the square.[1]

As C-3PO conversed with the tribe's shaman, Brethupp moved through a group of Ewoks who had gathered in front of the droid while carrying a spear. After the droid failed to convince the Ewoks not to cook his friends as part of a banquet in his honor, the Jedi Luke Skywalker, who was among the captives, used the Force to lift C-3PO and his throne into the air above the gathered Ewoks. Terrified, the panicked Ewoks fled away from the center, with Brethupp running toward Princess Leia Organa, a guest of the village and ally of the captives, and then standing next to the captive astromech droid R2-D2. Logray quickly commmanded that the prisoners be released, and Brethupp was part of the group that surged forward to free them.[1]

Brethupp drumming

Brethupp drummed on Imperial helmets after the Battle of Endor.

The rebels were soon accepted into the tribe, and Chief Chirpa declared that they would aid the rebels in attacking a shield generator bunker that the Galactic Empire had established on the moon. The next day, the Ewoks and rebels succeeded in destroying the bunker, which allowed an Alliance fleet to in turn destroy the Death Star II, an Imperial superweapon orbiting the moon. That night, the Ewoks celebrated with their new rebel allies in the village. During the festivities,[1] Brethupp drummed on a trophy collection of Imperial helmets.[3]

Personality and traits[]

Brethupp had mottled gray and white fur.[1]

Equipment[]

Brethupp wore a black hood and a brown belt. The Ewok carried a spear while in the village and used drumsticks while playing the makeshift drum set during the celebration.[1]

Behind the scences[]

Kiran Shah with Brethupp costume

Brethupp was portrayed by Kiran Shah.

Brethupp was portrayed by Kiran Shah[4] in the 1983 original trilogy film, Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi.[1] The Ewok village scenes were filmed between January 18 and February 2, 1982 on Stage 3 at Elstree Studios.[5]

In the current Star Wars canon, the character was identified on a Funko Pop! figure released for the 40th anniversary of Return of the Jedi in 2023. The Funko figure had a brown hood rather than the black hood seen in the film.[2] The character's name originated in the Star Wars Legends continuity, where the Ewok was first identified in the article Ewoks: Warriors of Endor in the Rogues Gallery department of Star Wars Insider 135,[6] which was written by Leland Chee and published on July 24, 2012.[7]
