Born George Fisher in New York, Peters set out for a career in show business at an early age. His film career began in 1954, with a role in the film Carmen Jones. As a film actor, his best-known roles were Tom Robinson in To Kill a Mockingbird and Admiral Cartwright in the Star Trek feature films Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
