"Sir, Rebel ships are coming into our sector."
"Good. Our first catch of the day."
―Lieutenant Cabbel and Captain Xamuel Lennox, during the Battle of Hoth[src]

Cabbel was a Human male lieutenant in the Imperial Navy during the Galactic Civil War. He attended the Officer's Candidate School on the planet Carida and was a recent graduate by 3 ABY. During that year, Cabbel served as the first officer of the Imperial I-class Star Destroyer Tyrant, part of Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader's Imperial Death Squadron, under the command of Captain Xamuel Lennox. Following Death Squadron's galaxy-wide search that led to the discovery of the Alliance to Restore the Republic's hidden base on the planet Hoth, Cabbel and Lennox both participated in the Battle of Hoth, during which the Tyrant was disabled by an Alliance ion cannon fired from the planet. Shortly afterward, the Tyrant made two attempts to capture fleeing Rebel General Crix Madine, which both ended with Madine escaping.

BiographyEdit

Cabbel, a Human male, lived during the Galactic Civil War. He attended the Imperial Officer's Candidate School on the planet Carida. By 3 ABY, he was a recent graduate and had also attained the Imperial Navy rank of lieutenant. That year, Cabbel served as the first officer aboard the[2] Imperial I-class Star Destroyer[3] Tyrant,[2] attached to the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Vader's Imperial Death Squadron,[4] commanded by Captain Xamuel Lennox.[5]

In the same year, the Imperial-class Star Destroyers of Death Squadron deployed Viper probe droids throughout the galaxy in an attempt to find the Alliance to Restore the Republic's hidden location. While Death Squadron was near the Qeimet system,[6] one of the probe droids discovered evidence of the Rebels' base on the planet Hoth.[1] Death Squadron then made a series of hyperspace jumps to reach the Hoth system,[6] culminating in the subsequent Battle of Hoth. While Vader's forces launched a ground assault on the planet, the Star Destroyers of Death Squadron, including the Tyrant, attempted to intercept escaping Rebel GR-75 medium transports leaving Hoth. Aboard the Tyrant's command bridge, Cabbel informed Lennox when the first of the transports, the Quantum Storm, escorted by two T-65 X-wing starfighters, approached the Star Destroyer's position. However, as the Tyrant prepared to intercept the transport, the Rebel based fired its planetary ion cannon at the Imperial warship,[1] causing its shields to overload, which made the Star Destroyer lose its helm.[7]

During the ground battle on Hoth, the Imperial forces captured Rebel General Crix Madine and took him to the Tyrant via a shuttle. However, the Tyrant was hit once more from a blast fired by the ion cannon, and Rebel commandos boarded the Star Destroyer and escaped with Madine via[8] a Lambda-class shuttle[9] stolen from the ship's docking bay. The Tyrant was unable to pursue its opponents due to the amount of ion damage it had received.[8] Although the disabled Tyrant was left floating through the Hoth system, and more Rebel transports made it off the planet, the Battle of Hoth still ended as a resounding Imperial victory, with the Rebels forced to retreat from their headquarters.[1]

Later on, Madine was brought aboard the Mon Calamari Star Cruiser Champion, which prepared to escape into hyperspace. In an attempt to recapture the Rebel General, the Tyrant, by then fully functional, launched its TIE fighters to attack the cruiser. However, the Champion in turn launched its fighters against the Star Destroyer. The Tyrant was unable to defeat the Champion's fighters, and the Mon Calamari cruiser escaped with Madine.[8]

Personality and traitsEdit

Cabbel had fair skin with brown hair[1] and brown eyes.[2] During his service as a lieutenant with the Imperial Navy, he wore a standard Imperial officer uniform.[1] Cabbel was efficient, as well as ambitious and ruthless,[2] and was described by his men in the same way.[10]

Behind the scenesEdit

Cabbel first appeared as an Imperial officer in the 1980 film Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. He was portrayed by Oliver Maguire and credited only as one of several "Other Officers." Cabbel and Lennox are both absent from the film's novelization, which instead attributes their scene and dialogue to Captain Lorth Needa and a controller aboard the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer Avenger. The film's script, as presented in Star Wars: The Annotated Screenplays and Star Wars: Behind the Magic, identifies Cabbel as a "Controller."

In 1998, Cabbel was first named and given a brief backstory on a card for the Hoth Limited expansion set of Decipher, Inc.'s Star Wars Customizable Card Game. Prior to that, film footage of Cabbel and Lennox from The Empire Strikes Back was reused in a cutscene for the 1993 computer game Star Wars: X-wing. However, Cabbel's Decipher card revealed that he had been a recent graduate from the Officer's Candidate School shortly before the Battle of Hoth, and that cutscene takes place three years earlier. Cabbel also appeared in the 2002 video game Star Wars: Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast, exclusively as a multiplayer avatar. He does not appear in the game's story mode. The Complete Star Wars Encyclopedia, released in 2008, also provided Cabbel with an individual entry.

  3. The Tyrant, as visible in this scene from Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, shares the same film model type as the Star Destroyer Devastator, seen here from Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Both Star Destroyers visibly have flap-like devices attached to their three primary engine nacelles (visible more closely here), whereas the Imperial II-class Star Destroyer visibly lacks these "flaps," as illustrated here in The Empire Strikes Back by the Star Destroyer Avenger (this comparison is more closely visible by the authentic real-world film models for the Devastator, seen here, and the Avenger, seen here), which is confirmed to be an Imperial II-class by Star Wars: X-wing Alliance. Given that the Devastator is confirmed to be an Imperial I-class Star Destroyer by Vader: The Ultimate Guide, this article likewise treats the Tyrant as an Imperial I-class based on the aforementioned identical visual evidence.
