Caluula was a planet that made up the Kingdom of Cron and later Xim's empire during the Pre-Republic era. After the empire's collapse, Caluula became part of the Tion Hegemony. Near the end of the Yuuzhan Vong invasion the Vong conquered the planet and sent approximately one-third of its population to Coruscant for sacrifice. Although the Yuuzhan Vong occupying the world were themselves killed as the first test subjects of Alpha Red. Despite assurances from its largely Chiss creators that Alpha Red was harmless to all flora and fauna indigenous to the galaxy, the Vong-targeting virus mutated during its test deployment on Caluula to kill and presumably drive to extinction the rare winged-star insects of Caluula. Whether Alpha Red continued to mutate and affect other Caluulan species is not known.
Hatching once every 300 hundred years, living only for a single day during which they procreated, laid eggs, and expired, it is likely that the question of whether any specimen of the galaxy-renowned winged-star insect survived Alpha Red will not be answered until 335 ABY.
[edit] Behind the scenes
Most sources, including current maps, place Caluula in the Tion Hegemony, but The New Essential Guide to Alien Species claims it is in "Caluula Sector."
Caluula is a real-world town in Somalia.
