It was the source of Spaarti cloning cylinders. It reluctantly sided with the Galactic Republic during the Clone Wars and the Battle of Cartao was fought 21 BBY

The names "Cartao" and "Spaarti" could have been inspired by Carthage (in Latin languages) and Sparta.[source?]
In Portuguese language, "cartao" (more properly cartão) is the word for "card" (as in "credit card").
