The Chiba DR-10, sometimes known as the "Chiba Drio," was a floating, spherical protocol droid—preferred by diplomats and officials of the Galactic Empire—which specialized in translation, negotiation, and legal advice. Equipped with an extensive sensor package and pop-out blaster, it also could function as a guard or probe droid. The Chiba DR-10 sometimes suffered behavioral flaws due to being programmed differently than other protocol droids. Moff Jander Graffe of the Darpa sector employed two such droids on the planet Esseles during the Galactic Civil War.

Characteristics
Edit
The Chiba DR-10 was an armed protocol droid used by those who needed protection as well as assistance with diplomacy. Its programming encompassed most of the translation and negotiation tasks required by its masters, and it had knowledge of Imperial law to an extent that it could offer legal advice. When situations became more complicated, the Chiba DR-10 was also capable of functioning as a guard, patrol, or probe droid, aided by its pop-out blaster and extensive sensor package featuring 360-degree, infrared, telescopic vision and motion sensors. Its protocol and tracking abilities were supplemented by a comlink and recording unit. The spherical droid employed a repulsorlift unit allowing it greater mobility than most protocol droids were afforded. Also different from other protocol units was the droid's heuristic processor: because the Chiba DR-10's behavioral inhibitors were programmed differently, it was prone to becoming sarcastic, impatient, and even aggressive. The droids could be purchased for
12,000 each.[1]
History
Edit
Imperial functionaries and diplomats whose line of work took them into danger tended to favor the Chiba DR-10, sometimes known colloquially as the "Chiba Drio." Jander Graffe, the Moff of the Darpa sector who hired thugs to fake Rebel attacks in support of his security taxes during the Galactic Civil War, had two DR-10s in his service on the planet Esseles.[1]
Behind the scenes
Edit
The Chiba DR-10 appeared in Coruscant and the Core Worlds, a Star Wars Roleplaying Game sourcebook published by Wizards of the Coast in 2003. This publication was written by Craig Robert Carey, Chris Doyle, Jason Fry, Paul Sudlow, John Terra, and Daniel Wallace; it was edited by Brian Campbell, Ray Vallese, and Val Vallese. The Chiba DR-10 image was illustrated by Tommy Lee Edwards.
