The cliff wampa was a bioengineered species of wampa. The Galactic Empire took notice of the destructive capability of the wampa after they wreaked havoc on the Rebel base on Hoth. Several wampas were captured and adapted to various climates, such as the steep slopes and high cliffs of Smuggler's Canyon near the Cadavine Sector Fleet Imperial Enclave, located on Gall. Their fur was gray or light-brown in color to blend in with their rock habitat. Their claws matched the Hoth wampa's in terms of strength.

The cliff wampa likely began as an inside joke among the game designers of Shadows of the Empire as a minor antagonist for the Gall spaceport level. Ryan Kaufman is listed in the end credits as a "Cliff wampa Zoologist." The cliff wampa's history was later expanded by Jon Knoles in Star Wars Insider 33. Dash Rendar had to deal with some when he was on Gall, trying to find Boba Fett.
