A cofferdam or pressure tunnel was a temporary, pressure sealed enclosure used to connect a starship in dry dock. Cofferdams were also used to connect starships with mismatched airlocks. The device itself was a flexible, ribbed tube that could attach to a surface with chemical, magnetic, mechanical, or negative pressure means. The Yuuzhan Vong equivalent was the oqa membrane.
