"Shocktroopers? What's the Coruscant Guard doing here?"
Hunter[7]

The Coruscant Guard was a corps of elite clone shock troopers of the Grand Army of the Republic, organized to serve as a military police force and protect the Galactic Republic capital planet of Coruscant. The Coruscant Guard served under the leadership of Clone Commander Fox, a clone trooper known for his fierce loyalty to the Republic as well as his command style of leading from the front. During the Clone Wars, Commander Fox became one of the most decorated soldiers in the Republic Military.

The Coruscant Guard performed various duties in their service to the Republic, such as patrolling the galactic capital as riot control troopers to assist the Coruscant Security Force, conducting hostage rescue operations, and serving as guards at the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center. They gradually supplanted the Senate Guard by accompanying Jedi, senators, and other diplomats on offworld assignments. As the galaxy-wide conflict with the Separatist Alliance progressed, the Coruscant Guard served as bodyguards for Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, a status they shared with the Chancellor's Red Guard.

After the formation of the Galactic Empire, the Coruscant Guard was retained by the New Order, and thus continued to serve as a security force on Coruscant, albeit with the new mission of enforcing the reign of the self-declared Emperor Palpatine. Fox initially continued to serve as head of the Coruscant Guard until his execution at the hands of the Emperor's enforcer, the Sith Lord Darth Vader.

The Coruscant Guard patrols the streets of Coruscant

The Coruscant Guard was a corps[1] of the Grand Army of the Republic during the Clone Wars composed of the elite and deadly clone shock troopers.[13] Led by Clone Commander Fox, the Coruscant Guards served as a Security Force on Coruscant, the Galactic Republic capital world where their main focus was protecting government buildings and vital infrastructure.[2] However, as the war progressed and the Senate Guard became increasingly ineffective and corrupt, the Coruscant Guard found itself often supplementing the Senate Guard and eventually fully taking over their function by serving as bodyguards for members of the Galactic Senate and the Supreme Chancellor. Shock troopers would also patrol the streets of Coruscant alongside the civilian police officers and GU-series Guardian police droids of the Coruscant Security Force, assisting them in pursuing suspects and in providing urban riot control.[12] Coruscant Guards would also be responsible for guarding the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center,[24] conducting hostage rescue missions,[17] serve as escorts for diplomatic missions,[16] and perform military police functions.[6]

Rescuing a Senator[]

"Is anybody home?"
―C-3PO, after Coruscant Guards blast open the door — (audio) Listen (file info)[15]

In the waning days of the Galactic Republic, the Secessionist Movement, under the secret guidance of the Sith, caused the Galactic Senate to debate establishing a military to defend the Republic. When the Jedi discovered that the Confederacy of Independent Systems had a droid army, the Senate granted Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine emergency powers. Palpatine, secretly the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious and engineer of the crisis, used the powers to establish the Grand Army of the Republic of clone troopers which had been grown on the planet Kamino under Palpatine's orders using the guise of a long dead Jedi Master, Sifo-Dyas. The clone troopers landed on Geonosis and the battle was the start of the Clone Wars. As the Grand Army deployed across the galaxy,[25] a division was established to protect the Republic capital of Coruscant. Called the Coruscant Guard, it was composed of the deadly and powerful clone shock troopers who were trained as peacekeepers and in urban pacification.[13]

When the son of Jabba the Hutt was kidnapped, Senator Padmé Amidala went to Jabba's uncle Ziro at his night club on Coruscant in the hopes that Ziro would convince Jabba to allow the Jedi to rescue his son. However, Amidala discovered that Ziro was involved with the kidnapping which had been perpetrated by Count Dooku, leader of the Separatists and secretly a Sith Lord. Dooku promised Ziro a large reward for the senator and the Hutt had Amidala escorted to his dungeon to be held. While in her cell, Amidala managed to contact her droid, C-3PO, to send help. Amidala was discovered and led to Ziro who instructed that she be executed. C-3PO meanwhile contacted the Coruscant Guard and requested their help in rescuing the senator. Commander Fox and several shock troopers accompanied C-3PO to the night club and blasted their way in. They engaged the droids in a fight, destroying them, and Amidala was able to free herself in the commotion. Together with the shock troopers, they then cornered Ziro who was attempting to escape, and Commander Fox placed the Hutt under arrest.[15]

Escorting Master Yoda[]

With both the Republic and the Separatists vying for suitable planets to establish bases, Jedi Grand Master Yoda was sent to the coral moon of Rugosa to secretly meet with Katuunko, the King of Toydaria. The Coruscant Guard sent an escort with the Jedi led by Lieutenant Thire and including shock troopers Jek and Rys. However, Asajj Ventress, apprentice to Count Dooku, arrived first to negotiate with Katuunko on behalf of the Separatists. The Republic cruiser was ambushed by several Separatist warships, but Master Yoda and the shock troopers were able to land on the planet though not where the negotiations were to take place.[16]

Ventress challenged Master Yoda that she would send her best battle droids against him. If the Jedi Master could defeat her army, then Toydaria would enter the Republic. However, should the Jedi fail, then Toydaria would join the Separatists. Yoda agreed to this challenge. The Jedi and the Coruscant Guards began to make their way towards the negotiation's location. As they made their way through the coral forest, the Jedi and shock troopers encountered heavy fighting during which Thire was injured. Yet, with the encouragement of the aged Jedi, the small force was able to prevail. Dooku, seeing that his plot had failed, ordered Ventress to assassinate King Katuunko. Yoda and the Guards arrived in time to prevent the king's death though Ventress was able to escape.[16]

A Gungan's orders[]

―Stone[8]

A squad of the Coruscant Guard led by Commander Stone escorts Representative Binks

Commander Stone and a squad of shock troopers accompanied Senator Kharrus to deliver a spice ransom to a band of pirates based on Florrum that had captured Count Dooku. However, they were ambushed by rogue pirates who wanted the spice for themselves. The pirates shot down the Republic shuttle and caused it to crash in the fields on Florrum's surface. Both the shuttle's clone pilots and Senator Kharrus were killed in the crash, with only Commander Stone, a sergeant, three shock troopers and Junior Representative Jar Jar Binks who became the highest ranking individual, left alive.[8]

After Kharrus had been buried and given an impromptu funeral, the rogue pirates ambushed the clones and stole the spice. While Commander Stone favored waiting for reinforcement, Representative Binks encouraged them to move forward. As Binks was technically the highest ranking person in the Republic mission, Stone recognized they had to follow his orders, though the shock troopers were hesitant. The group counterattacked the pirates and they were able to retrieve the ransom spice. The pirates then attempted to wipe out the clones, but the Republic forces managed to defeat the pirates and commandeer their craft, taking them to the pirate outpost. They arrived at the facility and departed Florrum with Jedi Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, who had escaped a brief captivity at the hands of the pirates.[8]

A time later, Coruscant Guards would take custody of prisoners who were captured by members of the Jedi Order and escort them to the Republic Judiciary Central Detention Center. Coruscant Guards stood by at the Republic Detention Center to take custody of Boba Fett and Bossk after they were captured by Plo Koon and Ahsoka Tano.[26] They were also present at the Jedi Temple to take custody of Aurra Sing who was captured after her attempted assassination of Senator Padmé Amidala.[27]

Coruscant Guards search for Duchess Kryze

When Duchess of Mandalore, Satine Kryze, held a secret meeting with Republic Ministry of Intelligence agent, Davu Golec in the lower levels, a Death Watch assassin had murdered Golec. The shot alerted a Coruscant police probe which arrived on the scene as a crowd gathered. The police probe identified a shooting had taken place, but seeing Kryze with a blaster over the deceased Golec, identified her as the suspect. Police droids arrived on the scene seconds later and informed Kryze she was under arrest. Shocked but maintaining her innocence, Kryze fled the scene with the police in pursuit. The police probe informed nearby Coruscant Guard shock troopers who joined the police in the foot pursuit. Running into a crowed, Kryze fired a stun bolt with her blaster, disabling the the police probe tracking her and sending it to the ground. The police droids tripped over the disabled probe and fell to the ground, with the riot troopers also stumbling over them. The moment of confusion allowed Kryze to blend into the onlookers and ducking into an alley.[12]

The troopers, however, spotted Kryze turning the corner and it was at that moment an individual in a speeder with a similar cloak as Kryze left the alley in his speeder. Believing the individual to by Kryze, the riot troopers communicated to the police units that she was fleeing the scene heading towards Section IG-44. Two Coruscant Police droids on BARC speeders picked up the chase, with more following, but allowing Kryze to avoid capture. Both Coruscant Police and Coruscant Guards continued the search for Kryze, questioning the locals if they had seen her, and Vice Chair Mas Amedda made a public statement demanding Kryze turn herself in to Republic law enforcement. Kryze requested help from an old friend, Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and agreed to meet him in Monument Plaza. Avoiding the Coruscant Police and troopers searching the park for her, Kryze handed the holodisc to Kenobi and, after escaping a brief fight with the Death Watch assassin, the two made their way to the Senate Building. There, Kryze turned herself into the Senate Guards on duty and Kenobi gave the holodisc to Senator Amidala who then played the full recording of Jerec to the Senate. In it, Jerec affirmed Mandalore's ability to deal with Death Watch and with this, the Senate voted to not occupy the planet, Kryze was vindicated, and the police murder investigation into her was closed.[12]

Coruscant Guards confront the bounty hunters

When the Hutts hired the bounty hunter Cad Bane to seize the Senate Office Building and force Supreme Chancellor Palpatine to issue a pardon for the Hutt crime lord Ziro the Hutt, who was imprisoned in the Detention Center. Bane formed a team of bounty hunters and infiltrated the executive building, disposing of multiple Senate Commando guards along the way, the team took a small group of senators hostage. Bane trapped Palpatine and Senator Orn Free Taa in the Chancellor's office by shutting down the building's power. Bane then demanded Ziro was to be released or the senators would be executed. To secure the Hutt's release in exchange for the senators' lives, Bane ordered Taa to take a pardon disc to the Detention Center to release Ziro.[17]

Taa reluctantly complied and was taken to the Detention Center by Bane's accomplices where the shock troopers on guard released Ziro. As final leverage against Palpatine, the bounty hunters set up a system of lasers around the senators that would trigger explosives with the slightest touch before leaving the building. Clone troopers of the Coruscant Guard led by Clone Commander CC-1010 arrived and stormed Palpatine's office then moved to apprehend Bane's team on the landing platform. However, with the still-trapped senators Palpatine ordered the bounty hunters to be allowed to escape with Ziro.[17]

Coruscant Guards were present later at the Jedi Temple along with Jedi Masters Yoda and Mace Windu for the arrival of Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Captain Wilhuff Tarkin who had returned from a mission on Lola Sayu. They escorted Tarkin to the Senate Office Building to meet Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.[28]

Terrorism and prison riot[]

"Turn your weapons off stun. Kill the prisoners if you have to."
―A Coruscant Guard trooper during a prison riot[24]

As the war progressed, the Confederacy of Independent Systems engaged in initiative towards a peace treaty with the Galactic Republic proposed by Separatist Senator Mina Bonteri. However, under the direction of Count Dooku, Coruscant was infiltrated by demolition droids who planned a bombing of the central power distribution grid. The droids arrived at the docks where the shock troopers were on patrol. They then showed their identification to Commander Fox who waved them through. Upon arriving at the generator they killed several engineers and planted themselves on the wall as bombs. The droids then exploded, crippling all electrical sources on Coruscant, which resulted in power outages and fires as well as civilian deaths.[29]

PrisonRiot-Deception

Coruscant Guards during a prison riot

A riot was instigated at the Detention Center by bounty hunter Cad Bane to provide a cover for his and Moralo Eval's escape. The riot began when Bane had a young Boba Fett confront Rako Hardeen demanding Hardeen apologize to him for killing Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi and depriving Fett of the bounty. Unknown to everyone, Hardeen was Kenobi in an undercover disguise. Hardeen and Fett fought each other before they were stopped by two shock troopers. However, the guards were knocked out by the Trandoshan Bossk who attacked Hardeen for fighting with Fett. At that point more Coruscant Guards arrived to stop Bossk. However, as they began to fight Bossk, the other prisoners joined the riot. A shock trooper on the balcony called for reinforcements while stunning the prisoners.[24]

As the riot grew, the Coruscant Guard troopers turned off their stun settings and began killing the prisoners that attacked them. During the confusion Eval and Bane began to make their escape. They were joined by Hardeen who convinced them to take him with them. The troopers were able to restore order though many prisoners were killed necessitating that they be cremated. Arriving at the detention center's morgue, the three were able to enter the chute cases before two clones arrived. The clones sent them down to the cremation center and there they attacked and killed the three clone officers on duty. Moving the loading bay, the three prisoners were able to overwhelm the troopers stationed there and escape in a Panther police interceptor.[24]

Shortly thereafter, members of the Coruscant Guard escorted Supreme Chancellor Palpatine along with members of the Senate Guard and Jedi Mace Windu and Anakin Skywalker to the planet Naboo for the upcoming Festival of Light. During the ceremony, Cade Bane and Moralo Eval put their plan into action under the direction of Count Dooku to kidnap Palpatine. Together with their group of bounty hunters which included Kenobi as Hardeen, they infiltrated the security detail using holographic disguise matrices. Kenobi was able to pursue Eval and Bane who had taken Palpatine. He was able to capture them shortly before the arrival of Windu, Skywalker, and a Coruscant Guard trooper who arrested the two kidnappers.[18]

Arresting Tano[]

"Can't say I blame you Commander Tano, but all the same, you're under arrest."
―Fox, to Ahsoka Tano[6]

When a hangar in the Jedi Temple was the site of a explosion that killed six Jedi and several clone troopers and Temple employees. After the explosion, the hanger was secured by troopers of the Coruscant Guard while Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker and Padawan Ahsoka Tano investigated the incident with the assistance of the crime scene analysis droid Russo-ISC. With anger and confusion spreading, family members of the employees killed gathered outside the Temple to protest the Jedi. The Coruscant Guard was sent to the Temple with several riot troopers and a LAAT ship to assist the Jedi Temple Guard in controlling the crowd. The investigation found that Letta Turmond, the wife of Temple employee Jackar Bowmani, had fed him volatile Nano-droids which then exploded killing Bowmani and causing the bombing at the Temple. Turmond was arrested by Skywalker and Tano and placed in a holding cell in the Jedi Temple.[30]

Commander Fox arrests Ahsoka Tano

However, with clone troopers killed in the explosion, the Republic military claimed jurisdiction of Turmond who was taken into their custody under the direction of Admiral Wilhuff Tarkin. Turmond was moved to the prison complex at the Republic military base which was under the control of the Coruscant Guard. However, Turmond refused to talk with anyone except Tano and so Admiral Tarkin requested Tano come speak to Turmond. Arriving at the base, Tano found Commander Fox personally monitoring the guard station. After having her leave her lightsabers and comlink at the guard post, Fox and two other troopers escorted Tano to Turmond's cell.[6]

Leaving Tano with Turmond, Fox returned to the guard post. Meanwhile Turmond revealed that a Jedi had showed her how to make the bomb in an effort to make a statement against the Jedi being involved in the war. Before Turmond could give Tano the name, Turmond was Force choked, unknown to all, by Jedi Barriss Offee. However, the view from the security cameras made it appear as if Tano was the one choking Turmond and a shock trooper notified Fox of Turmond's distress. Quickly Fox and two other troopers rushed into the cell, only to find Tano, apparently distraught, bending over Turmond's dead body. Fox, while not blaming Tano for wanting revenge on a traitor, placed her under arrest.[6]

The Padawan's escape[]

"Alert, alert! The Jedi prisoner has escaped!"
―Fox[6]

Admiral Tarkin, upon being notified of the situation, arrived to interrogate Tano. He was escorted to her cell by two Coruscant Guards. Showing Tano the recording, Tarkin pointed out that the video appeared to show Tano telekinetic-ally choking Turmond though Tano maintained her innocence. Tarkin ordered that no one else was to be allowed to see Tano. Shortly thereafter Anakin Skywalker arrived and began arguing with Commander Fox, demanding to let him in. Fox had two shock troopers activate their electrostaffs, threatening to enforce the Admiral's orders with force, at which point Skywalker left.[6]

AhsokaEscape

Coruscant Guards briefly corner Ahsoka Tano

After that, Tano discovered a key card outside her cell. Believing it had been left by Skywalker, in actually it had been Offee, Tano used the key to leave her cell. Arriving at the guard post, Tano found three wounded shock troopers and next to them her lightsabers and comlink. At that moment Commander Fox entered the guard post and seeing Tano, issued the alert. Three Coruscant Guards chased her north into the corridor and sealed the area before a Coruscant Guard trooper notified Fox. Pursued by Fox, Tano came upon three troopers who had been killed by a lightsaber. Tano continued to run when Fox arrived. Assuming Tano as the killer, Fox issued a shoot-to-kill order.[6]

However, Anakin Skywalker arrived at that point with Captain Rex who argued with Fox that Tano would never kill troopers like that. Skywalker, failing to convince Tano to surrender, ordered the base locked down and searched. Tano was able to avoid a squad of Coruscant Guards, including Trooper Hound and his massiff Grizzer, who were patrolling the memorial area. However she was spotted by Commander Fox and his squad and was chased to the pipelines outside the base. The shock troopers attempted to stun blast her, but Tano was able to block them. She was briefly surrounded by several Coruscant Guards but managed to escape into the sewer system with Skywalker, Rex, Fox, and several squads of Coruscant Guards following her. Skywalker was able to chase her down one length of pipe which ended at the underworld portal. Tano, restating her innocence jumped into the portal onto a transport and escaped capture as Commander Fox and Captain Rex arrived.[6]

Hunting a Jedi[]

"We're taking you in now, Commander."
"That's not gonna happen. Trust me."
―Wolffe and Ahsoka Tano[31]

A short time later, two squads of Coruscant Guards were sent to find Tano in the Coruscant Underworld. One squad was under the command of Anakin Skywalker and Captain Rex and the other squad was commanded by Jedi Master Plo Koon and Commander Wolffe. Utilizing two police gunships, the squads followed a lead from the Coruscant Security Force's Underworld Police division that Tano had been spotted on Level 1312. Descending into the underworld, the squads were able to spot Tano along with with Separatist agent–turned–bounty hunter Asajj Ventress. Tano and Ventress activated the terminal gate's shield, preventing pursuit after which Skywalker ordered a group of probe droids to find the two fugitives. Wolffe and his team of Coruscant Guards then disembarked from the police gunship to monitor the probe droids' findings.[31]

Coruscant Guards hold Tano at blaster point

Before long, the squad found that Tano had been spotted and he immediately took his troopers to apprehend them. Upon being cornered and held at blaster-point by Wolffe's men, Tano attempted to get them to back down, but Wolffe refused to let her escape. A fight ensued, with Ventress activating her lightsabers and cutting through the shock troopers' blasters. Tano also joined the fight, making sure that she and Ventress did not harm the troopers beyond rendering them unconscious. Disabled and winded, Wolffe and the Coruscant Guard troops were unable to prevent Tano and Ventress from escaping. Notifying Master Koon that Ventress had been involved with Tano's getaway, Wolffe and his shock trooper squad had to recover before picking up the chase.

Meanwhile, Ventress left Tano who arrived at an abandoned munitions warehouse on Level 1315 and was attacked by Barriss Offee disguised as Ventress. Their ensuing fight caught the attention of two Coruscant Police officers who notified Skywalker's squad of Coruscant Guards. The two squads arrived and found Tano in a lower storage room. Although Tano pleaded with Wolffe to let her explain, he stunned her unconscious before she could utter another word. The Coruscant Guard took her into custody and she was taken back to the Jedi Temple.[31] With the evidence stacked against her, and at the demand of the Senate, Tano was expelled from the Jedi Order and turned over to the Republic military to be put on trial for her alleged part in the bombing of the Temple. Escorted to the courtroom by Coruscant Guards, she was defended by Padmé Amidala and persecuted by Tarkin. Skywalker discovered that fellow Jedi Barriss Offee was the true culprit, having worked with Turmond and then framed Tano for her crimes. Offee was then taken into custody while Tano was acquitted. However, Tano chose not to rejoin the Order when offered re-admittance.[32]

Clone conspiracy[]

"Well, there's a sinister plot in the works against the Jedi! I have proof of it! I can prove that everything I know is true beyond the shadow of a doubt!"
―Fives[19]

Coruscant Guards searching for Fives

During the Battle of Ringo Vinda, Clone trooper Tup shot and killed Jedi General Tiplar. Tup was brought to Kamino under Fives' watch, but died from complications involving a tumor and the rotting of an implanted behavioral modification biochip. To cover up the Sith plot, Kaminoan Doctor Nala Se injected Fives with a drug that would slow his reaction.[19]

On Coruscant, Fives was framed by Chancellor Palpatine of attacking him and escaped from the medical facility. Fives took a cab to 79's, a clone bar where he ran into his friend Kix and asked him to pass a message onto the commanding officers of the 501st Legion, Anakin Skywalker and Captain Rex to meet him so he could tell them what he learned in an attempt to clear his name. Unknown to Fives, he had been spotted and followed down to the meeting area by and the Coruscant Guard had been sent to capture him.[19]

Skywalker and Rex arrived at the location Kix had given them and were ordered by a hiding Fives to throw down their weapons. Tossing away their weapons, Fives enclosed them in a ray shield. Both Skywalker and Rex wanted to help Fives, but neither seemed to believe his story, his drug-hazed state not helping his cause. Commander Fox and a squad of shock troopers ambushed the rogue clone, pointing their weapons at him and demanding he stand down. Out of desperation, Fives grabbed a blaster pistol and attempted to hold them back, but Fox shot Fives through the chest in retaliation. Skywalker and Rex were freed from the ray-shield and Rex went directly to Fives. Fives explained he was just trying to do his duty before reiterating Tup's final words before he too, died.[19]

Commander Thorn's final stand[]

"What is it, Commander Thorn?"
"We're under attack by the Separatist garrison. Looks to be a full invasion!"
"Invasion?"
"We can't get to you! I suggest you get to a ship as soon as you can!"
―Padmé Amidala and Thorn[5]

As the war continued, Republic and Separatist representatives met on the planet Scipio to jointly preside over the installation of Rush Clovis as leader of the InterGalactic Banking Clan. Senator Padmé Amidala went to Scipio as the Republic representative. Accompanying her was a garrison of the Coruscant Guard led by Commander Thorn.[5]

Thornattacked

Commander Thorn and his men are attacked.

Shortly after Clovis became the head of the InterGalactic Banking Clan, he found himself being blackmailed by Separatist leader, Count Dooku, to raise interest rates towards the Republic and not the Separatists. Dooku also pressured Clovis to allow the Separatists to take full control of the bank. After Clovis agreed, Commander Thorn and his shock troopers detected Separatist fighters closing in on the landing platform they were stationed at. Thorn ordered the troops and gunships around them to get off the landing platform and regroup beyond the city gates. He then warned Senator Amidala of the incoming Separatist invasion. However, Thorn informed her that they would not be able to get to her in time and she needed to flee the planet. The attacking droid fighters shot the gunships and Consular-class cruiser down, leaving the remaining shock troopers with no reinforcements.[5]

As Thorn and his men rushed toward the entrance of the neutral zone, droid gunships entered the firefight and blocked their path in the front and the landing pad behind them. The droids began to cut down the shock troopers and deployed commando and super battle droids to attack. Thorn was the last to remain standing but kept fighting, using his rotary blaster cannon as a melee and long range weapon. However, he was greatly outnumbered, and was shot multiple times in the chest until he was finally killed by a commando droid. These actions prompted the Galactic Senate to send forces of the Grand Army of the Republic under the command of General Anakin Skywalker to free the planet. In the aftermath of the battle, the Senate turned the banks over to the direct control of Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.[5]

End of the Clone Wars and Order 66[]

"I want you to go to the detention level. Execute Maul."

―Rex and a Coruscant Guard trooper[14]

Ahsoka Tano prevented the Coruscant Guards from executing Maul.

Following the Siege of Mandalore and the capture of renegade Sith Lord Maul by the 332nd Division, a contingent of shock troopers from the Coruscant Guard were dispatched in a Nu-class transport to escort him and provide additional security. When the Nu-class arrived[14] on the Tribunal,[33] in orbit, additional shock troopers helped transport him to a holding cell, and kept him under guard. When Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, secretly the Dark Lord of the Sith Darth Sidious, issued Order 66 that branded the Jedi as traitors to the Republic, the clone shock troopers on the Star Destroyer helped members of the division attack former Jedi Ahsoka Tano on the bridge.[14]

After Tano escaped the bridge, a clone shock trooper aided Clone Commander Rex recuperate. Rex then ordered the trio of shock troopers on the bridge to execute Maul, and then began creating a strategy to execute Tano. Tano, however, freed Maul after incapacitating the two shock troopers guarding him so that he could distract Republic forces away from her. Maul then went on a rampage throughout the ship as he made his way towards the main hangar, and encountered additional shock troopers from the Coruscant Guard, some of which he knocked unconscious and others in which he killed. All remaining clones aboard the Tribunal were subsequently killed when the vessel crashed on the surface of a remote moon.[14]

LAATi-troopers

The Coruscant Guard chases escaping Jedi to a landing pad.

With Order 66 commencing the Great Jedi Purge, the Coruscant Guard under Commander Fox aided with the initiative's implementation on Coruscant itself.[11] When Jedi Master Kelleran Beq escaped from the 501st Legion's Operation: Knightfall with the Jedi youngling Grogu, the Coruscant Guard pursued them aboard Low Altitude Assault Transport/infantry gunships. After one of the LAAT/i was destroyed, as Beq tricked the shock trooper pilot into flying the path into a train, the other arrived behind him to a landing pad, where Beq met up with a detachment of the Royal Naboo Security Forces for help in escaping aboard a H-type Nubian yacht. While Beq and Grogu escaped aboard the yacht, clone troopers, some in blank-white armor and others in red-Coruscant Guard shock trooper armor, stepped off the gunship and traded fire with the Security Forces. Several V-wing starfighters chased the Nubian but failed to destroy it before escaping into hyperspace.[20]

Service to the Empire[]

Master Yoda later confronted Sidious in a duel in the Senate chamber which reached a stalemate. Several Coruscant Guards arrived, one of them being Clone Commander Thire, and unsuccessfully searched for Yoda's body, however, the Jedi Master had escaped with the aid of Senator Bail Organa. Sidious, suspecting that his apprentice Darth Vader was in danger, left Coruscant for the planet Mustafar with a detachment of Coruscant Guards. The shock troopers soon found the mangled and burned body of Vader, defeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi, and alerted Sidious. As soon as he saw Vader, Sidious ordered the shock troopers to get a medical transport. Returning to Coruscant, Sidious and Vader were taken to the Grand Republic Medical Facility, all under the watchful eye of the Coruscant Guards. There, Vader underwent surgery that encased him in a life supporting suit.[22]

During the funeral of Padme Amidala in the city of Theed, Naboo, a detachment of Coruscant Guards provided security for the occasion. When two of the troopers found senator Bail Organa, who was speaking to an undercover Ahsoka Tano in a restricted area, they checked his identification and informed him that he would need to be escorted back to the ceremony, to which Bail agreed.[34]

Hunt for Jocasta Nu[]

"Stop there, citizen. Identify yourself."
―Fox, to Jocasta Nu[23]
Jocasta and the Coruscant Guard

After returning to Coruscant, Jocasta Nu utilized the Jedi mind trick on Commander Fox and his guards.

In the early days of the Galactic Empire, the Coruscant Guard retained the duties of patrolling the levels of Coruscant, constantly checking the identifications of citizens. When Jedi Master Jocasta Nu returned to Coruscant after the initial purge there, she ran into Fox and several other shock troopers on patrol, and used a Jedi mind trick to get past them, in order for her to reach the Jedi Temple.[23] As Nu was able to infiltrate the Temple, her starfighter was discovered by members of the Coruscant underworld police, she ordered her droid, Beetoo to self detonate, resulting in a large explosion that killed the police officers as well as Beetoo. After the bombing, Coruscant Guard members were involved in securing the bomb site and aided the newly established Imperial Security Bureau and the underworld police in the investigation.[35]

Once Nu was detected in the Temple, Vader ordered the Coruscant Guard and the underworld police to secure the entire perimeter. As a result, the Coruscant Guard deployed two companies while the underworld police deployed an entire contingent.[11] The shock troopers fired on Nu when she attempted to flee out of a hole she'd blasted in the Temple wall, prompting her to fight them off with a lightsaber. When Vader appeared at the breach as well, the shock troopers mistook him for a Jedi as well (Commander Fox having neglected to provide a description of the Sith Lord) and opened fire on him as well before Fox arrived in a police gunship and ordered them to cease fire. Fox attempted to apologize for his blunder but Vader, not in the mood for apologies, snapped the commander's neck with the Force before ordering the remaining shock troopers to capture Nu alive.[36]

The archivist attempted to jump to her death, but Vader held her in place with the Force and she was bound and loaded into the gunship. When Nu taunted Vader over the knowledge she possessed that he now knew, one of the shock troopers offered to gag her in order to cut off her Jedi lies. Nu, still darkly amused, fired back that they themselves were taking orders from a Jedi in the form of Vader, who was once Anakin Skywalker. Vader then killed all shock troopers in the gunship by blasting them out of it, sending them plummeting to their deaths.[36]

Imperial Defense Recruitment Bill[]

TruthAndConsequences-Rampart

Coruscant Guards arrested Edmon Rampart for destroying Tipoca City for his personal agenda.

Months after[37] the destruction of Kamino's cloning facilities, the Imperial Senate begun a vote on the Imperial Defense Recruitment Bill, which would formalize the Imperial Military's transition from an army comprised entirely of clone troopers, to a recruitment-based force of non-clone soldiers. Several squads of Coruscant Guard shock troopers were in attendance and provided security for the occasion. When Vice Admiral Edmon Rampart was exposed before the Senate for having personally ordered and taken part of the destruction of Kamino via his fleet of Venator-class Star Destroyers, a squad of shock troopers forcefully arrested Rampart under orders from Emperor Palpatine, who had appeared to address the Senate.[38]

Continued service[]

During this early period under the Empire, a contingent of[39] Coruscant Guard[source?] shock troopers bulldozed several homes, including the home of Orvek, in a forested area to construct a relay station. Although the individuals were to be compensated, Orvek and others protested that they only knew one home and did not know where to go. Unflinching, a shock trooper grudgingly informed Orvek to go somewhere else. After the encounter, Orvek joined a group of disciples that was led by former Jedi Padawan Ferren Barr, who was posing as a Jedi Master.[39]

In 14 BBY,[40] two clone shock troopers became involved in a hunt for two rogue Imperial Inquisitors when Lord Vader required a speeder to chase them down. After the Inquisitors destroyed the thrusters of the speeder, Vader leaped across other speeders while the speeder with the two Coruscant Guard members crashed and exploded in a park, killing a Gran senator and her companion.[21]

Behind the scenes[]

The Coruscant Guard first appeared in Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith when they are searching the Senate chamber for Yoda and later they accompany Emperor Palpatine to Mustafar and escort Darth Vader back to Coruscant. In Star Wars Legends they were initially described only as clone shock troopers who were brought in gradually during the Clone Wars, serving as the predecessors to the Imperial-era Coruscant Guards. However, in canon, the shock troopers were fully established as the Coruscant Guard from the beginning of the Clone Wars making their appearance in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars film. Throughout the Star Wars: The Clone Wars television series the Coruscant Guards would perform various police functions and as the series progressed, they could be seen increasing in authority and duties, marginalizing the age old Senate Guards and Coruscant's civilian police.[source?]

  39. Star Wars: Timelines dates the events of Tarkin to 14 BBY. As Darth Vader knows about Wilhuff Tarkin's past on Eriadu in Darth Vader (2017) 18, which he only learned about in Tarkin, issue 18 must take place after the novel. The later issue Darth Vader (2017) 19 featured the Second Sister, who was killed in Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Fallen Order takes place five years after the Great Jedi Purge, which is dated to 19 BBY by Star Wars: Galactic Atlas. Therefore, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is also set in 14 BBY. As Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith 18 is between both Tarkin and Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith 19, the events of the issue must take place in 14 BBY. Since Darth Vader (2017) 20 takes places immediately after the 19th issue, the events of this issue must also take place in 14 BBY.
