"We should list this planet as a potential base in the future. The Empire's not interested, not much space lane traffic in the area, and there's plenty of water."

Thane Kyrell and Yendor of Corona Squadron[src]

D'Qar was a verdant planet located in the Outer Rim Territories. By the thirtieth year after the formation of the New Republic, the planet was the location of the headquarters of the Resistance, a small military force formed by Senator Leia Organa to combat the growing threat of the First Order, a successor state to the Galactic Empire. The Resistance later evacuated their base, escaping the First Order.

Description

DQar TFABG

The planetary ring around D'Qar

D'Qar was a planet located in the Ileenium system of the galaxy's Outer Rim Territories.[1] An obscure world far from the main space lanes,[12] the remote[3] D'Qar was surrounded by a wide planetary ring that cast a shadow on its forested surface.[7] The lush, jungle-covered terrain did not host any intelligent life, though creatures such as birds and insects called the huge trees and fast-growing roots of the jungle home. Aside from the foliage, D'Qar's surface featured plains and mountains.[3]

History

At one point, D'Qar was home to a civilization. By 34 ABY, this civilization was long gone, leaving behind immense ruins.[13]

Early rebellion

During the early rebellion against the Galactic Empire, D'Qar served as a shadow planet and deep space cache for the Alliance to Restore the Republic. D'Qar was included in a map of the galaxy that listed safe worlds, starfighter hubs at level five or higher, regional headquarters and operations sectors, and deep space caches. The map was then incorporated into The Rebel Files.[14]

Galactic Civil War

"Corona Two, do you also read negative?"
"Confirmed. Complete negative on Imperial activity. Unless the Empire's drafting small woodland creatures all of a sudden.
"
―Corona Four and Corona Two[src]

Following the Battle of Hoth, Corona Two, Four and Five of Corona Squadron were sent to D'Qar to investigate possible signs of Imperial outposts and activity. This occurred after reports from deep-cover spies on Coruscant revealed that the Empire had been processing massive amounts of material for the Imperial Starfleet, as well as circulating rumors of a new large-ship construction facility. Nonetheless, after exhaustive scans in the planet's hemispheres, planetary and solar orbits the squadron came up empty and returned to its MC80 star cruiser Liberty.[5]

The Rebel Alliance then established a small outpost on the planet, however, the Galactic Civil War ended with the signing of the Galactic Concordance, eliminating the need for a full-scale base to be constructed.[11][1]

Conflict with the First Order

After The Rebel Files were rediscovered on Durkteel[14] in 34 ABY[15] and handed to the Resistance, Major Caluan Ematt and General Leia Organa wrote annotations. Organa wrote a question, asking if the Alliance built up D'Qar during the early rebellion, or if it was later. Major Ematt rebutted that it was later along with Mirrin Prime, after the Battle of Yavin, and he would know as it was his Shrikes that scouted both locations.[14]

In the same year,[16] the outpost was used as the base of operations for the Resistance, a small military force funded by like-minded New Republic senators who feared the growing power of the First Order, a military junta that aimed to succeed the Galactic Empire.[7] Most of the base was hidden underground, with the planet's thick foliage helping to conceal the facility from air and ground sensors.[3]

After the First Order's destruction of the Hosnian system, D'Qar was to be the next target of the First Order's superweapon, Starkiller Base. However, the Resistance managed to launch an attack against the weapon, destroying it and its threat to the destruction of the system.[7] Shortly afterward, the Resistance evacuated their base, but were interrupted when a First Order fleet arrived above D'Qar. Almost immediately after the last U-55 orbital loadlifter had taken off, the base was annihilated by four blasts from the First Order Dreadnought Fulminatrix's orbital autocannons. The Fulminatrix was later destroyed by the Resistance bomber Cobalt Hammer, and the Resistance fleet escaped from the system, leaving the First Order behind.[17]

Inhabitants

At one point, D'Qar had been home to a culture advanced enough to build cities.[13] By the time of the Galactic Civil War, D'Qar lacked intelligent life, but the planet teemed with a wide variety of species. Large trees with fast-growing roots covered the planet's surface, inhabited by many insects and nocturnal creatures, while flocks of avians dominated the skies.[3] It was the homeworld of Jacque Porte.[18]

Behind the scenes

The planet D'Qar was first revealed by the magazine Empire on November 26, 2015.[19] Its location in the galaxy was revealed in its print issue, using a map created for Star Wars: The Force Awakens: The Visual Dictionary.[1] The planet went on to appear in the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.
