[edit] Characteristics

A DL-44 with holster.

The DL-44 did not have as fast a fire rate as the E-11 blaster rifle or FC-1 flechette launcher, but its accuracy was unmatched compared to these weapons.

It also sported a charge function, to increase the level of armor piercing the blasts were capable of. Also featured were a motion sensitive scope and efficient galven circuitry that allowed the pistol to deal more damage without draining additional energy.

As a side effect, however, it had a somewhat slow rate of fire and used about 4 times as much energy as a standard blaster, exhausting its power pack in about 25 shots. It weighed about 1.3 kg. A unique feature of the DL-44 is the vibration system built into the handgrip. A small stud in the grip begins to pulse gently to alert the user that the weapon's remaining energy is sufficient for five shots or fewer.

[edit] History

It found some use by the Rebel Alliance on account of its ability to consistently penetrate stormtrooper armor. It was soon outlawed by the Empire because of this.

The DL-44 was sometimes used by Kyle Katarn and to a greater degree his students, Jaden Korr, and Rosh Penin, even though they all followed the teachings of the Jedi and wielded lightsabers. Han Solo and Mara Jade were among the many smugglers and bounty hunters who wielded modified DL-44 blasters.

Merr-Sonn Munitions, Inc's imitations of the DL-44 included the Flash 4 and Power 5.

[edit] Behind the scenes

The DL-44's design is based on the German Mauser C96 pistol. This famous gun was wielded by both its German creators and the Ottoman Empire during World War I, and wound up in the hands of such notable figures as T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and Winston Churchill. The C96 pistol also saw service among various revolutionary movements throughout the world following the First World War. The original DL-44s of the classic trilogy were created from Mausers with simple muzzle and grip accessories, as well as a rifle scope mounted on top.
