The Dai Bendu,[1] also known as the Bendu,[3] were a religious group[1] that were the precursors of the Jedi Order.[2] The first holocrons were attributed to the Dai Bendu.[2] The symbol of Galactic Republic that adorned the starfighters of the Jedi Knights dated back to the Bendu monks' study of numerology, in which the number nine—symbolized by eight spokes joined to one disk—signified the[3] benevolent[6] presence of the Force in a united galaxy.[3] In the galactic standard calendar, the fifth and final day of the week "Benduday" was named for the Bendu monks of the planet Coruscant.[4]

They constructed a monastery in what became Kijimi City on the planet Kijimi[1] around 965 BBY.[7] The existence of the temple prompted the Brotherhood of the Beatific Countenance to make a pilgrimage to Kijimi, inhabiting the Quarter of the Beatific.[1] It was believed locally that Skordu had originally been invented by the Dai Bendu monks back when the city was still a religious stronghold.[8]

After the fall of the Republic and its replacement by the Galactic Empire in 19 BBY,[9] the self-appointed Emperor Palpatine personalized the ancient icon of the Bendu by removing two spokes, thus creating the Imperial crest.[3]

  5. Unlimited Power establishes that Dai Bendu were precursors of the Jedi Order. As Star Wars: Timelines places the founding of the Jedi Order in 25,025 BBY, the founding of the Dai Bendu must have occurred prior to that year.

  7. According to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker: The Visual Dictionary, the Dai Bendu Monastery was constructed on Kijimi a thousand years prior to the planet's destruction depicted in Star Wars: Episode IX The Rise of Skywalker. As events of The Rise of Skywalker took place a year after the Starkiller Incident, as established by The Visual Dictionary, and because Star Wars: Galactic Atlas states that the Incident occurred in 34 ABY, the monastery was constructed around the time of 965 BBY.
