Dopplegänger
From Wookieepedia, the Star Wars wiki.
Dopplegänger was a Force power that allowed a user to create a perfect illusion of his or herself through the Force.

[edit] Characteristics
The caster could perceive all of the dopplegänger's senses, and to those interacting with it, the dopplegänger seemed real. The user could even interact with the world using telekinesis to move objects, furthering the believability of the illusion. The doppleganger could also be detected by all droid audio and video sensors. The doppleganger would fade away if the force-user was injured and ceased using the power. Dooku[1] and Luke Skywalker could use this ability.[2]
A Force Phantom was similar to a Dopplegänger, being that it was an astral projection of a being created through use of the Force, but it was a projection of something other than the user's own image. Force Phantoms were also most likely used only by the dark side, and usually exhibited corporeal properties and inflicted damage on living beings.
[edit] History
The only known creators of Force phantoms were the powerful and skilled darksiders Lumiya and Alema Rar, the former who created killer mynocks to attack Ben Skywalker and Nelani Dinn, and a phantom of the deceased Edela Klauskin before her unstable husband, Matric Klauskin. Lumiya also created phantoms of Mara Jade and Ben Skywalker to fight against "each other" - that is, the real Mara Jade's speech was channeled through the phantom across the galaxy to Ben and vice versa.
She did the same with Luke Skywalker and Jacen Solo, Alema having used them to project herself across the galaxy to combat the Solos and Zekk and Jag Fel. After many minutes of sustaining several Force phantoms, they both abruptly ceased and appeared to have been under great strain. It is possible that she learned the ability from Darth Vectivus who seemed to appear before in a similar fashion, although he may have been a Force ghost.
Also, a Dopplegänger of Darth Maul fought Darth Vader, but Vader emerged victorious. This happened again when Mara Jade fought a dopplegänger of herself while searching for Kyle Katarn.
Force phantoms should not be confused with Force Illusion, as the phantoms have physical attributes.
[edit] Behind the scenes
The German spelling is "Doppelgänger", but the use of the term in popular fiction varies. The Dungeons & Dragons games often use the Americanized spelling of "doppelganger."
