The Dowutin were a species of large humanoids that hailed from Dowut, a Core World.[2] They were known for their mercenaries.[1] Grummgar, a member of this species, was present at Maz Kanata's castle with the spy Bazine Netal just before the First Order attacked.[7] At least one Dowutin was known to have been Force-sensitive[3] and had ties with the Jedi Order[8] before eventually joining Emperor Palpatine's Inquisitorius program.[3]

The Dowutin were first pictured in a Vanity Fair article released May 4, 2015 which included a group photo of characters in Maz Kanata's castle.[9] The species later appeared in a video shown at Comic-Con.[10] The species appeared in canon in early December 2015 with an expansion added to the mobile game Star Wars: Commander.[1] They then appear in the film Star Wars: Episode VII The Force Awakens.[7]
