Energized armor drew on the power source of the droid and applied a current through a specially designed matrix on the armor, hence the energized armor Mark III created a nearly impenetrable physical barrier. Much more resilient than the Mark II armor, it was difficult to manufacture and took years to produce, thus it became the most expensive droid armor on the open market.
