"He used to like pairing him up with Duurga for arm-wrestling. But after Chewbaacca pulled one of Duurga's arms out of its socket, he stopped those bouts. He hasn't let Chewbaacca anywhere near Duuurga since."
―Luuke Skywalker on Thrawn's arm-wrestling contests between Duurga and Chewbaacca[1]

Duuurga was the second clone of the Hutt crime lord Durga Besadii Tai created by Imperial Grand Admiral Thrawn. Cloned from samples of the original Hutt collected by Luuke Skywalker, a clone of Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker, who had died in 9 ABY, Duuurga was created in place of Durga's first clone, Duurga. Thrawn had enjoyed pitting Duurga in arm-wrestles against Chewbaacca, a clone of the Wookiee Chewbacca, which eventually ended in the Hutt having one of his arms pulled out of its socket. After Duuurga was cloned, Thrawn did not let Chewbaaca near him.[4] Like the original Durga, Duuurga was 3.7 meters tall, had no hair and orange eyes.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Duuurga was mentioned in "An Apology," a non-canon short story by Timothy Zahn that was released on April 1, 2012 as an April Fool's Day joke.[4] While the original Durga identified as male,[5] the short story did not specify if Duuurga did the same. In "An Apology," actions taken by characters after they were cloned were performed by clone imposters. Durga was not replaced before his death, and he could not play a role in another Star Wars story afterward; therefore, his clones did not. Duuurga was referred to in the present tense in "An Apology," meaning that Duuurga was still alive when "An Apology" was written in 44 ABY.[4]

Notes and references[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 "An Apology" states that the original Luke Skywalker was killed and replaced with Luuke Skywalker in 9 ABY, meaning that Duuurga must have been created after that.
  2. "An Apology" says that Duurga arm-wrestled with Chewbaacca, who was created soon after the death of his template in The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime during 25 ABY. The short story implies that Duuurga and Chewbaacca were allowed to be in each other's company until Duurga's arm was pulled off, meaning Duuurga was alive at that point.
  3. 3.0 3.1 3.2 3.3 3.4 The New Essential Guide to Characters gives these traits to Durga, meaning that Duuurga would have them as well.
  4. 4.0 4.1 4.2 4.3 4.4 "An Apology"
  5. Darksaber.
