E-5 battle droids were enhanced B1 battle droids designed by the Trade Federation following their humiliation in the Invasion of Naboo. E-5 droids had increased intelligence and had complete autonomy, centralized control having been removed to avoid shut downs when the CCC was destroyed, with more armor, although these droids were not much smarter than their predecessors. They were quickly outmoded by the B-2 super battle droids.
