The Eighth Fleet was one of the nine main fleets of the Navy under the Galactic Alliance government during the Second Galactic Civil War in 40 ABY.^[1] It had been created after the Alliance victory in the Yuuzhan Vong War in 30 ABY, and perhaps even during the Corellian crisis itself.

During the crisis, it was one of three fleets assigned to Crix Base in the Coruscant system, along with the Third and Ninth.^[1] In this role, the Eighth Fleet apparently served as the main defense of the Galactic capital: the Third Fleet was assigned first to maneuvers in the Outer Rim Territories and then to the blockade of Corellia,^[2] while the Ninth was an enigmatic new command, the role of which appears to have still been largely secret.^[1]

It is possible that the Eighth Fleet was one of the two Hapan Royal Navy fleets which Queen Mother Tenel Ka placed under Alliance command during the crisis,^[3] but if these were included among the nine numbered battlegroups, they are perhaps more likely to have been the Sixth and Seventh Fleets. Either way, this would imply a very recent date of creation for the Eighth Fleet.
