An electronet, or Golan Arms RGL8 electronet grenade, was an ensnaring weapon shaped as a grenade and shot from a grenade launcher. The grenade casing opened during the shot and revealed a two-meter net that captured a fleeing target. The operator of the launcher might then use a control panel under the weapon to unleash an electric charge that would go through a trailing guide wire from the panel to the net, damaging the captured target. This weapon was favored by bounty hunters, including Garim Ayrvn.

DescriptionEdit

The RGL8 electronet grenade, commonly called simply electronet, was a composite of sticky fibers making a web and hidden in a grenade-like canister round, with a thin control wire or trailing guide wire communicating it with a control panel.[1] The grenade was to be charged in a standard grenade launcher, with the control panel attached under the weapon.[3] Then, the grenade was shot. At a pre-specified range, the control panel sent a signal that prompted the casing to open. The webbing was unraveled and expanded[1] to cover a two-Imperial standard meter area.[1][2] If the shot was precise, then the target—commonly a living being—would be ensnared at this point.[1]

The fibers of the electronet conducted current. The operator could then use the wire to unleash an electric charge to stun or kill the prisoner. Although the operator could have shot several electronets to different targets, the control panel could electrify only one net at a given time.[1]

A single electronet grenade weighed five kilograms[2] and had a maximum range of 500 meters.[1]

HistoryEdit

The electronet was developed by the company Golan Arms. In the days that followed the Battle of Yavin,[1] it was hard to obtain, but it did find some use between bounty hunters who wanted to capture fugitive prey.[3] One of these bounty hunters was Garim Ayrvn.

During the Clone Wars Trandoshan hunters used this type of net to subdue Padawan Ahsoka Tano while she was on a mission with her master and Plo Koon. She was kidnapped and taken to Trandosha's moon to be used as prey in a Trandoshan hunt.[1]

Behind the scenesEdit

The electronet was mentioned in two role-playing guides: Galaxy Guide 10: Bounty Hunters (1994), written for West End Games' Star Wars: The Roleplaying Game; and Scum and Villainy (2008), written for Wizards' Saga Edition Roleplaying Game.
