"It's time to start over. That is our first order. To begin again. And to get it right, this time."
"Yes, of course, Grand Admiral. Anything you need. Glory be to Grand Admiral Sloane."
"No. Glory goes only to the Empire."
―Rae Sloane and Brendol Hux[src]

After the fall of the Galactic Empire in 5 ABY,[2] Grand Admiral Rae Sloane envisioned an Empire of her own. The new Empire would rise in the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, as intended by Counselor Gallius Rax according to his modified version of the Contingency. However, the plan was taken over by Sloane after Rax's death. Using coordinates taken from Rax, Sloane departed from known space in the company of Commandant Brendol Hux, his illegitimate son Armitage, and a group of child soldiers. Shortly afterward, the Galactic Empire was officially dissolved when Grand Vizier Mas Amedda signed the Galactic Concordance, a peace treaty that marked the end of the Galactic Civil War. The New Republic was victorious, although several Imperial remnants rejected the treaty and continued to fight in the months following the war's end.[1]

Rax's coordinates led Sloane to the location of the Eclipse, a Super Star Destroyer hidden in the Unknown Regions. After discovering the warship, Sloane came to believe that she could rebuild the Empire by colonizing the entire region. The fact that the Unknown Regions remained largely unexplored was seen as an additional benefit by the Grand Admiral; unlike the rest of the galaxy, the Unknown Regions would have never known of a time without an Empire. Nevertheless, Sloane was considerably worried by the prospect of recreating the Empire, a task which she viewed as the beginning of her struggle.[1]
