"Entrenched" is a 12-page comic featured in Star Wars: Visionaries, written and drawn by Alex Jaeger and M. Zachary Sherman.

Plot summary[]

This tells the story of the Battle of Hoth through the eyes of a young Rebel soldier, Corporal Jobin. He has recorded a holographic message for his mother, and the words in his message parallel the events in the story.

The Rebel troops prepare for the Imperial assault, and the Empire unloads AT-ATs and Juggernauts. Jobin fights in the trenches with his squad. One of his men spots a group of snowtroopers and an AT-ST advancing on the Rebellion's planetary ion cannon. He orders half of his squad to stay in the trenches with Jielu while he takes four men to retake Ion Control. After attempting to reach Ion Control, he tells two of his men, Grond and Sora, to flank the AT-ST while he, Roj, and another Rebel rush it head-on. They destroy the walker and move on to the ion cannon.

Meanwhile, the snowtroopers inside the now-captured emplacement listen to Rebel requests for ion support. The Rebels burst in. They dispatch the Imperials, losing Grond and the unidentified Rebel in the process. When Jobin fires the cannon, his men set it to self-destruct. The three remaining troops retreat to Hangar Bay Seven, only to find Darth Vader and his troops.

Jobin and his squad retreat to Hangar Bay Ten, but Jobin is shot. He gives his recorded message to Roj. Darth Vader briefly interrogates him, but he doesn't talk. After Jobin spits on his helmet, Vader kills him. Mon Mothma, Jobin's mother, reads Jobin's letter at the Rebel rendezvous point near Sullust. Crix Madine tells her he's dead. She then goes to brief the Rebels for the Battle of Endor, with resolve in the words: "The Emperor has made a critical error, and the time for our attack has come."

Development[]

"Original story I pitched was about the ‘Imperial troops have entered the base!' Guy. I wanted to see the guys in the trenches during the battle as well as Ion control. And get to draw AT-ATs, AT-STs and snow troopers. All done in my free time while still working full time."
―Alex Jaeger[4]

"Entrenched" was written by Alex Jaeger and M. Zachary Sherman, and also drawn by Jaeger. The comic was created for the 2005 graphic novel anthology Star Wars: Visionaries, which was edited by Jeremy Barlow and compiled from comics by concept artists who had worked on the prequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith.[1] Jaeger originally pitched the idea for the comic as explaining the backstory for the line "Imperial troops have entered the base,"[4] which is spoken over Echo Base's intercom in the 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V The Empire Strikes Back.[5] He was motivated to write a story focused on the rebel troopers in the trenches on Hoth, while also illustrating components of the Imperial Army such as AT-ATs, AT-STs, and snowtroopers. Jaeger completed work on the comic during his spare time while he was working full time.[4]

Continuity[]

Though the Rebels set the ion cannon to self-destruct in this story, the ion cannon is functional again by the time of Jaden Korr's mission to Hoth.

On page 69, there is a mistake in Vader's line: were instead of where.
