Etahn A'baht was a brigadier general in the Dornean Navy and later in the New Republic Defense Fleet. As a commander, A'baht was a conservative tactician and a constant devil's advocate. He was a strategic realist and refused to allow optimism to leave him unprepared.

A'baht led the 80 starships of the Dornean fleet against repeated efforts by the Imperial Navy to subjugate Dornea. Under his leadership, Dornea was able to stay free throughout the reign of Palpatine.
During the Battle of Endor, he led the Braha'tok-class gunship Torktarak against the Carrack-class cruiser Eminence, eventually destroying the cruiser.
When A'baht joined the New Republic navy, he was allowed to keep his title of General despite its conflict with the fleet's rank system. In 16 ABY, A'baht was chosen to command the newly commissioned Fifth Battle Group making him equivalent to a Commodore. Although the decision was doubted by some Senators, such as Molierre Cundertol and Cian Marook, A'baht was quickly faced with an opportunity to prove his mettle against the Yevetha during the Black Fleet Crisis. His efforts to blockade the Koornacht Cluster following the Yevethan massacre of worlds near the Duskhan League struggled at first, but after the Fifth's task forces were supplemented by idle fleet segments, A'baht was able to drive a successful campaign against the Yevethan fleet that climaxed in the use of Operation Strong Hand at the Battle of N'zoth.
Sometime after the pacification of the Yevetha, A'baht was relieved of command of the Fifth Fleet and replaced by his friend Kiles L'toth. A'baht continued to ascend the ranks of the Defense Fleet, although he often chafed against the political and bureaucratic demands that came with increased rank—a quality he shared with his friend Admiral Ackbar. By 25 ABY, A'baht was a Brigadier General and a member of the New Republic Defense Force command staff. Like other members of the High Command, A'baht advocated holding ground in the Mid Rim instead of withdrawing fleets to the Core Worlds. He assisted in the analysis of Yuuzhan Vong strategies and took part in the planning of the failed trap at Corellia.
