Kenobi: "Master Piell, are you all right?"
Piell: "Obi-Wan, what took you guys so long?"
Skywalker: "At least your sense of humor is still intact."
Piell: "It takes more than they got to break me, young Skywalker."
―Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker free Even Piell from his containment field[src]

Even Piell was a male Lannik Jedi Master who served on the Jedi Council during the Invasion of Naboo and the Clone Wars. Considered brusque, bellicose, and even gruff, Master Piell was nonetheless respected for his immense courage.

BiographyEdit

Even Piell was at the Jedi Temple when Qui-Gon Jinn told them about his encounter with a Sith Lord. He was also there to test Anakin Skywalker to see if he was the Chosen One. Following the death of Qui-Gon Jinn, Piell and the rest of the Jedi Council then went to Naboo to attend his funeral pyre and the Victory parade.[5]

Clone WarsEdit

During the later years of the Clone Wars, the aged Jedi was tasked with investigating shortcuts into Separatist-held space. Master Piell discovered the Nexus Route, a hyperlane route that allowed one to access both Separatist and Republic homeworlds. The Nexus route held strategic importance to both the Confederacy of Independent Systems and the Galactic Republic, to the extent that while returning from an assignment, Jedi Master Even Piell's ship was waylaid by Separatists. Piell and his crew (including Captain Wilhuff Tarkin) were eventually captured and imprisoned at the Citadel.[7] In the course of escaping the detention facility, after being freed by a Jedi and clone trooper strike team,[8] Even Piell was gored by a vicious Anooba and, subsequently, expired from his wounds--after having revealed his part of the co-ordinates of the Nexus Route to Padawan Ahsoka Tano.[9]

Personality and traitsEdit

Even Piell had a distinguishing scar on his face, which rendered his left eye useless. He wore his scar as a badge of honor.[1]

Powers and abilitiesEdit

Master Piell was well regarded for his excellence in lightsaber combat; namely his adoption and integration of numerous fighting styles.[10]

Piell was also revered for his courage and telekinesis powers. [1]

Behind the scenesEdit

In the 2015 reference book Ultimate Star Wars, Even Piell's species was mistakenly identified as Zabrak.[11]

  2. According to Tarkin, the events of "The Citadel" occur a year after a battle on Murkhana, which itself took place nine months after the Battle of Geonosis. As a result, "The Citadel" takes place one year and nine months into the Clone Wars. Since SWCustom-2011 Star Wars: The Clone Wars Chronological Episode Order on StarWars.com (backup link on Archive.org) places "Citadel Rescue" after "The Citadel," it can be concluded that "Citadel Rescue" also takes place over a year into the war.
