"Into exile I must go. Failed I have."
―Yoda, after failing to defeat Darth Sidious[1]
Obi-Wan Kenobi ME

Obi-Wan Kenobi, during his self-imposed exile on Tatooine.

Exile was a form of punishment or penance used by numerous beings across the galaxy in which the punished were banished from society. The term hiding referred to those who lived in exile though not as a form of punishment.

History[]

"...he lives in the Outer Rim, in exile."
―Mother Talzin tells Savage Opress about his long-lost brother Maul[2]

At the end of the Mandalorian Civil War, those who continued to embrace the Mandalorian warrior culture were exiled to the moon of Concordia. Concordia's governor, Pre Vizsla of Clan Vizsla, would reorganize these Mandalorians into Death Watch with the intent of retaking Mandalore from the New Mandalorians.[3]

UneasyAlliance-Eminence

Maul joined forces with Pre Vizsla and the exiled forces of Death Watch.

After his defeat at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi during the Battle of Naboo,[4] the Sith Lord Darth Maul was abandoned and entered exile[2] on the junk world of Lotho Minor until his brother Savage Opress discovered and rescued him.[5] Maul would be brought to Dathomir, where Mother Talzin restored his sanity as well as giving her son new cybernetic legs.[6] Soon after, he and his brother would ally themselves with Vizsla and the exiled warriors of Death Watch.[7]

At the end of the Clone Wars, Jedi Master Yoda went into self-imposed exile on Dagobah after he failed to defeat the Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, who was directly responsible for the near extinction of the Jedi Order. After his duel with Darth Vader on Mustafar, Obi-Wan Kenobi, entered self-imposed exile on Tatooine to watch over and protect Vader's secret son, Luke.[1] Many Jedi who survived Order 66 and the Great Jedi Purge went into exile to escape the Galactic Empire and their Inquisitors.[8]

The Chiss known as Thrawn claimed to have been exiled by his own people, but secretly engineered matters with their aid to create the appearance of this, in order to gain acceptance into and study the Galactic Empire. When questioned by the Imperials as to his background, Thrawn described himself using the Sy Bisti term for "exiled": "Xishu azwane."[9] Later, during the Liberation of Lothal in 1 BBY, Thrawn was banished into a forced exile on the extragalactic planet of Peridea when Jedi Padawan Ezra Bridger summoned a pod of purrgil to aid the rebel effort. The purrgil dragged both Thrawn and Bridger, along with Thrawn's Destroyer, the Chimaera, and crew to another galaxy.[10] By 9 ABY, Thrawn's forces, as well as Bridger, would escape Peridea thanks to the efforts of Morgan Elsbeth.[11]

After his failure to train a new generation of Jedi, Luke Skywalker went into self-exile on the planet Ahch-To,[12] shutting himself off from the Force and intending to spend his last days marooned and alone.[13] A year later, his apprentice Rey intended to replicate the feat, but was convinced by the Force spirit of her master to instead continue the fight against the First Order.[14]

Following his death at Endor, Galactic Emperor Darth Sidious was secretly resurrected in a clone body on Exegol,[15] where he remained in exile. In exile[16] on Exegol, Sidious was attended to by Sith loyalists, who toiled endlessly to keep their venerated master alive by coupling their genetic engineering[15] technology with the occult of the dark side of the Force,[17] while the deposed Emperor built the Sith cult into a military force of soldiers and workers.[16]
