Pivotal to any ground campaign, Field Commanders improved the morale and tactical abilities of all ground units under their command.
With their bodyguard of four elite infantry, they were often seen in the heat of battle, urging their troops on.
It should also be noted that the battlefield was not the only danger Field Commanders faced. They also were often targets of assassins and bounty hunters and were sometimes killed before a conflict had even begun.
The rank was also used by the Yuuzhan Vong warrior caste.

In the game, Star Wars: Empire at War, Field Commanders increase the health and sight range of all nearby units. This could be explained as the presence of the commander increasing morale.
